bleached oak floors...too dated????please help
Comments (17)Thank you for the responses. I'm not sure if I have bleached oak or white wash. It is not "pinkish" which I've assumed was more of a pickeled, it is more whiteish or yellowish actually after being 20 years old. Bigdoglover (I love big dogs, too btw..) the reason I didnt want to involve the stairs and railing was because it also includes the whole upstairs and hallway (and the floor in my bedroom, but that didnt bother me as much) so, I just didnt want to deal with it. I think what I have decided to do is carpet the stairs and hallway and get the warmer wood in the kitchen/dining/livingroom that I've always wanted. I'll have to just sand and stain the banisters, thats all. I dont mind the carpet in these areas, as it is now I have a runner on the stairs and hallway...so this will just be wall to wall in that area. There are too many problems with the bleaching and besides, my husband really despises it. Thanks again for all of your help. Now on to newer problems.....!...See MoreTired of feeling oak woodwork is dated & ugly
Comments (39)OP here - so I posted my original post because I was dreading going to a holiday party at a friend's brand new house that has all white woodwork and kitchen. I was envious and not looking forward to it. Guess what - while I liked her house and the white was certainly pretty, the first thing she says is that it's hard to keep clean (she's been there 5 months). I loved her large island but the house overall was small and cramped. I came home with a new appreciation for my home. It may have oak which can certainly be painted but I wouldn't want to sacrifice our square footage just for a new and different look and have a new mortgage. Ours is paid for. The grass is not always greener on the other side. Anyway, hubby and I know we eventually want to live in a one story house and the plan is to move to one when last child is done with college in 4 years. We will have plenty of time to plan the new home. And isn't that a big part of the fun - the dreaming and anticipation?!...See Morecan someone please rip apart my kitchen plan?
Comments (202)Hurray my order is in! I was only left with one door that was out of stock, so they added it on to the giftcard. It was MUCH easier than I was imagining. The guy helping was great. It probably helped that I waited at the door for opening. He walked around with me to view different trimming options and such, and I also got a quote for the quartz. I'll go back on Monday to get that ordered. I went with Grimslov. I was so back and forth I just decided while there and it feels good that I don't need to keep wondering what to choose. There are so many options and in the end they all look nice. Thank you times a zillion for everything!! And Thank you to everyone. This was so eye opening and helpful in so many ways. Now starts prepping for my temporary kitchen, stockpiling the freezer some more and getting ready for demo. Everything will be delivered Thursday the 22nd....See MoreWill this look out of date soon? Comments (13)To answer some of the questions, there is a lot of construction dust at the moment. The cabinets are not what I would consider to be blotchy. I think it’s just the dust. The cabinets are not the highest quality, but they do have some upgraded features. They are Merillat in maple with a dusk stain. They have dovetail joints, soft close and upgraded glides. The floor is a laminate maple look in a light warm gray stain. Here’s a picture from a section with less dust. I hope they are good enough to get through the next ten years without looking horribly dated. While changing out the cabinet hardware, faucet and lighting would be easy enough down the road, I do worry that the black schluter edge and even backsplash style might appear out of style soon. The backsplash is a 2x4 beveled white (matte I think) tile in a stacked horizontal layout. The lighting fixture I posted above is less than $150 so that will be easy enough to change out. I also worry about a the very neutral, possibly drab decor. My current home is very neutral too however (SW dover white walls, whitewashed oak look floors, beige/white/brown furniture) and I like it. I do have blue as an accent color though. I hope to add some color with a rug and maybe throw blankets and pillows. Most of the artwork will be what I currently have, which are nice b&w enlarged family photographs, but I’ll switch out the frames to black. I will be adding in some brass, perhaps in accent furniture and lighting fixtures. The kitchen does read as dark which is the total opposite of what I have now. It doesn’t help that there’s only one window in the kitchen. Looking out from the kitchen to the living/dining there is a ton of light....See MoreBarnes Custom Builders
