Will glass tile look dated in 5-10 years?
Comments (42)catmom and hellonasty, thanks so much for your kind words! As a matter of fact, so far I do love it. I've been working w/an interior designer this time around, because we need all new furniture and I HATE shopping for furniture. And since all color choices work together, they've chimed in on wall colors, cab paint choices, etc. I wouldn't budge on my granite, though. The designer, not familiar w/River White, was pushing for something more "common," like Santa Cecilia or something. I knew River White would be amazing w/the deep brown of my cabinetry ... but then she pushed for a different color in the Marazzi Catwalk style glass mosaic. The Pecan Pump is gorgeous, no doubt, but she just wasn't getting the point that my granite was not going to have ANY yellow/gold in it at all. And that's the direction the Pecan Pump leans. I was already using Sable Slipper for that focal wall in master bath, so I had it in hand and when I held it up to my granite, there was no question - the colors were wonderful, pulling out the best shades in each other. Happily, once she saw the granite IRL she couldn't help but agree. catmom, the candy cane red cabinets happened on a whim: closet that would go unused, my cabinetmaker and I started spitballing ideas about wall-mounted gift-wrap holders, and pretty soon I had perimeter cabs in a decently-sized closet. Well, in that situation you HAVE to go a little outside your comfort zone, right? ... and w/absolute black granite Somehow, this kitchen is coming so much closer to the "ideal" picture I've been carrying in my mind for years, even though the last one was beautiful and very much representative of my taste at that moment. But I'll always believe the one factor that threw off that whole kitchen for me was the backsplash. It was very current, but just not "me" at ALL. This time, the backsplash is all me....See MoreDo these cabinets look dated?
Comments (56)Your cabinets are beautiful - really gorgeous and well made - and most likely Cherry from the picture you have posted. I wouldn't touch them other than to change the hardware. I'm not an interior designer by any stretch but I can't emphasize enough what a difference additional lighting would make in your kitchen. Take pictures of your kitchen and room measurements into a bona fide lighting store. They can help you with how much wattage - both in overall lighting and spot/task lighting you should have in a room of that size. That was the best thing we did 26 years ago and while our kitchen is large, it's sure not fancy. But it faces north and in the dead of winter I have plenty of light. Also, there are some great LED replacement cans by CREE that they have in HD now that don't suck up the energy like the old cans. (Our electric bill has dropped substantially as we have been replacing our old light bulbs with LED bulbs as they burn out.) I mention that because if you have energy efficient bulbs in that room, you won't mind turning on the lights when the room is dark. Do a search for CREE the Lighting forum to read about them. The good news is that you don't have dark countertops (which absorb light) so any painting or backsplash will help you if you use light colors as others have suggested. And I agree with the others to live in your house for a while before you take on anything major or expensive to get a feel for how you use your space. Good luck and enjoy those very pretty cabinets!...See MoreWill gray cabs look dated in a few years?
Comments (24)I fell in love with the Martha Stewart Sharkey Gray cabinets. But after comparing prices, which were very good at Home Depot,I might add, and looking at pros and cons for painted cabinets, etc. I went with a local cabinet maker, and a lighter, more dove, gray. The Marthas had more taupe in them, and I wanted to pair the gray with black appliances, black and gray Dura Ceramic floor,. and a Sanded Gray Staron solid curfacing for counters. I have never liked the coldness of granite. My cabinets, in fact, are Thermafoil, which I had decided I would not like. But my cabinet guy took me to a house he had done n 2004 with Thermafoil, and they were BEAUTIFUL!!I am as we speak at the cabinet installation, keeping in mind also that this was a full gut kitchen remodel. I am really pleased with these cabinets, at a MUCH lower price than paint. I will have black pulls and knobs, which I think will pop nicely...I love red, so think red kitchen accessories will look great, and will also be fun. About gray being the in color for 2011...who knew...I just liked it. And about being tired of them? Well, that's possible with anything, right? In my case, I have lived in a kitchen in a house built in 1927 (love the house) with one functional counter for 21 years....I think in my case, it will be awhile until I am bored (:>) If I could figure out how to do it, I would down load some before and after shots!! This remodel experience has been very positive for my husband and me. We gutted our tv room and turned it into a great laundry/sewing rooim as well, so for the entire tear out, we have had a functional sink, electric cooking gadgets and a really large surface to use. That saved us, I think. I can't imagine doing this with nothing but a bathroom sink to wash dishes!!...See MoreWorried abou black cabinets looking dated
Comments (32)I would not listen to your GC. Follow your own instinct or you might be unhappy at the end of the project. I updated a small powder room (no window) about eight years ago with a black vanity, Carrera top and polished nickel faucet and hardware. I still think that it looks smart and elegant. Like a little black dress, you can dress it up or dress it down. I also have several pieces of black furniture that I have collected over the years and still love them. You could always just do a feature wall in black and bring in some black accents as they've done in the second photo with the legs on the bar stools....See More- 4 years ago
