wild coffee would probably grow there. The flowers are small, but the red berries are pretty and it may attract butterflies and birds.

Jatropha may need more light than she has. Mine planted in shade against the house insisted on growing up to the roofline, seeking sun. When I cut it back, it did not bush out but duplicated what had been cut - just trunk stretching up to the roof line where the sun is - and up there it blooms. It's taken years for it to fill in a little. My Jatropha planted 3 yards away in some sun, stays 5 feet high and blooms year round.

That's true, Irma. I'll have to think on something that does well in shade. Everything I can think of won't retain color in the shade, except variegated ginger, and it's not that tall.

There are many beautiful elephant ears, since they do well there. How about some of the "black" ones? There really aren't any colorful shrubs that do well in shade. If you want color, you'll have to settle for some kind of ground cover with something taller in the middle, I think. The variegated oyster plant or variegated ginger would do well there around a giant elephant ear.

How about a "Song of India" dracaena? They're beautiful and easy to keep tamed down to the height you want.

I agree with Crotons. You may get 4 ft out of them but not 6. They do quite well in the shade and have plenty of color. There are a lot of varieties so shop outside of the big box stores for the good ones.

I have crotons in other parts of the yard. We had elephant ear in there but took them out, they finally got a bit "warn out" after several years. For now I planted a big blooming hydrangea in there while I keep looking.

Azalea? There are so many types, sizes, and colors in the nurseries this month. I would plant several different ones, as they bloom at different times. My very small ones (like the new ones now at my Lowes for only $6) bloom on and off all year. But they are not in complete shade... don't know if that matters.

Azaleas are pretty mingy in S FL. Maybe Panama Rose?
