Plinth Blocks - Can they be Added Later?

Hello,

We are re-placing the molding on our doors. We want to add plinth blocks but we haven't made a final decision on what size baseboards to use. Can we put in the door casing now and add the plinth boards later or is that a bad idea? I think the baseboards will be 5 to 6 inches tall. How much taller should the plinth blocks be than the baseboards? The baseboards will be flat with a simple cap on top. Our door molding is the same as in the photo below but we would probably leave the plinth blocks square instead of cutting at an angle.

The reason for putting off the baseboards is that we have old carpet that we can't afford to replace right now. If we replace the baseboards, should we put them on top of the carpet or will this cause a problem later when we need to replace the carpet? I'm thinking that the baseboard should go in after the flooring has been torn out since we plan to put in new carpet in the living room but we're thinking of using LVP or tile in the hallways and dining room where we have carpet now. Seems like it's hard to do things right unless you have enough money to do everything at once.
