Is it ok to mix perlite with soil when repotting Ficus Benjamina?

Hi there!

Recently my 34 year old Ficus Benjamina started to loose a lot of
leaves. Totally healthy looking green leaves were falling of! I purchased it 2
years ago and had a feeling that the roots are either rotting or outgrowing the original pot. I
think it shows on the photos that the tree itself is proportionally larger than
the pot was. When I pried off the pot I could see that the roots were heavily
compacted & tangled.

I assumed this was the reason for the falling leaves. I also
made sure that I water it the day after the top 2 inches of soil dry out. For this I had to wait 8-10 days after each watering. Just before repotting the water would sit on top of soil and only slowly seep into it.

When repotting, I had to cut some roots in order to remove the
compacted chunks of soil and the tangled roots.

I combined 2 parts tropical plant soil (6.2pH) with 1 part perlite. My idea was that the addition of perlite will
provide extra drainage. However now it seems that instead of draining, it is retaining the water. It
has been 2 weeks since I repotted it and watered it and top of soil is still
wet. I am afraid that the roots will rot.

Now the tree is doing worse than before repotting. Now the leaves
are drying on the tree without falling. I would say only one third of the
branches have leaves on them. Is this due to the perlite? Or is it just a
general repot trauma?

FYI - I am in Hungary and last year the tree lost a significant
amount of leaves during winter, however it was not as bad as now. It started to
regrow leaves in March. Do you think it will survive? What can I do to help it
live?

All your input would be greatly appreciated!
