new to ficus bonsai...asking about repotting and soil make up
Comments (14)If you look closely at the photo I've attached you'll see the new bud growth (4) at the bases of two of the three remaining branches. Because of a lack of proper sun light I've acquired a grow lamp that could be contributing to this new bud growth but I alse have to thank moochinka for the advise to cut back on some of the branches. These are the three remaining branches. They seem to be getting longer and longer, but on a positive note though there is the (4) new bud growth. Is there a safe way to control the growth length of these three remaining branches without damaging the tree? It just seems so stringly and spindly at this stage! Is there any way I can promote more new budding at the bases of the limbs? The orphan and its companions are thriving thanks to the knowledge I've acquired on the forum. Comments (8)yes it will perk back up in no time. unless you damaged a bunch of roots in the repotting process, if all you did was repot it you'll be fine. Did you root prune too. also if there is standing water in the dish dump it out and let the soil dry just a little. if in the next few days it still looks bad cut it back to the bottom shoot because the roots may have been damaged and it's having trouble pulling enough water to supply all the leaves on the top 3/4 of the tree. water is the main cause of death for many house plants. be it too much water because we love them so much we think we're doing what's best for it or too little water because it's in a hard to water location or we just neglect it. Damp potting soils are also prone to getting fungus gnats so it's imperative to let your soil dry out between watering. I think if you cut it back to the bottom shoots it will be back around 5ft tall by winter. Good luck and please give us an update us on it in the next few days....See MoreIf i put my ficus benjamina outside will that get rid of bugs in soil?
Comments (15)It CAN matter, but usually doesn't matter all that much with houseplants. BA 3-in-1 contains a systemic fungicide (tebuconazole). If this gets into the soil, it's going to kill the soil-borne fungi. If part of the fungal population happens to be of the mycorrhizal variety and is in a symbiant relationship with the root system, up to 1/2 of the root system's ability to acquire water and nutrients can almost instantly go away. That can be a pretty hard hit. It's more likely to be an issue in outdoor plants during cool weather when mycorrhizal symbiosis is more likely to play a more significant role. I never see evidence of mycorrhizal hyphae in my indoor plants (even when they're outdoors), but I do see significant natural development of hyphae in almost all my temperate plantings in late fall through winter and into spring. Best luck, EHH! Al...See MoreSwitching larger ficus Benjamina to gritty mix?
Comments (45)Plastic pot with holes on the side would certainly allow more air to get in quicker. I had done that once. I had to be more careful watering since some of the water will exit from the holes leaving less to reach the bottom and the core. If the soil dries out a bit too much it will shrink a bit and create an air space around the pot. So more water tends to escape through the holes when watering from the top. Dunking it in a tub of water is a lot safer....See Moreistvanreg
