DIY Sliding Closet Doors?

numbersjunkie

I have a reach in closet with an 8 ft opening and want to make new sliding doors to replace the current mirrored doors. The current panels are 4 ft wide, and I may decide to switch to 4 panels for better access and because the wider doors seem out of scale in the space. New hardware is planned.

I plan to paint the doors, and would like a shaker style (single panel). I can't afford custom doors, so I was thinking we could make our own doors using mdf sheets with trim strips added around the edges.

Is MDF the right material to use for this application? I know it is more stable than plywood, but would the top mounted hangers screwed into the MDF hold up over time? Any other suggestions or ideas?
