Ogon 'Gold Rush' Dawn Redwood: is it smart; or what?
Comments (13)Horseman, your question about the growth rate is similar to what I am wondering. My tree has not added any height at all since it was planted last year. Neither does the trunk seemed to have thicken enough for me to perceive, if at all. If the late winter freeze issues had not distracted me, I would have been posting questions about the slow growth rate. Yesterday, I read on a website describing the cultivar, that the 'Gold Rush' cultivar does grow slower than the species. My 'Gold Rush' has a clean trunk about 3 feet up before the trunk forks of into two thin, flexible and arching, but still slightly branched and well leafed out trunks which makes up the canopy of the tree. It looks to me that the only reason the trunk is not branching out lower on the trunk is due to the way the grower pruned and trained the tree prior to shipping it to me. I planted mine in mid May of last year, and yes in the heat and drought of the summer the leaves did tend to want to turn brown. Whenever I saw the slightest amount of browning in the leaves, I would water the tree well, and each time, the leaves responded quickly, by changing again to their nice bright healthy color. Currently the leaves of my 'Gold Rush' look golden, and I can see some of the healthy bright green of the cultivar's normal spring leaf color trying to emerge from the base of those golden colored leaves....See Morestuff ya just can't rush...
Comments (24)I guess this thread gave me a craving for homemade fudge. Made a batch this afternoon. Deb, I hope you are feeling better. If you lived closer I'd bring you some fudge. The ingredients - white sugar, brown sugar, butter, a little white corn syrup instead of maple syrup, a cup of heavy cream and a pinch of salt. After the mixture came to a boil, it took exactly 12 minutes to reach the softball stage. No where near an hour. I didn't make note of the time it took for the mixture to reach boil stage, but it was definitely less than 10 minutes. Probably closer to seven over medium heat. If you don't like beating fudge, you can get the same results by letting the mixture cool for 10 minutes. Reduces the beating/stirring time substantially. Add vanilla (if you are adding dark or white chocolate, do it now) and beat until the mixture starts to dull. Add nuts if using and pour immediately into a butter dish. Let cool....See MoreGold Rush Dawn Redwood losing needles
Comments (11)Stuart, what kind of rain or water has it been getting? When mine are smaller than me a gallon or two every three days seems to keep them going. As they get bigger, just turn on the hose. On a side note, has it had any yellow foliage at all? My Ogon is pretty yellow right now but it is mostly in the sun. Oh, I see little evidence of buggers eating it. The foliage drop is almost certainly due to a lack of water. Maybe due to competition. Nice thing is these are fairly difficult to over water....See MorePost your recent Metasequoia Ogon "Gold Rush" photos please
Comments (19)That's good to hear about the burning Toronado. We have a similar climate as you over here in the Kansas City area. We flanked our driveway/house with one on each side. I think they should frame the house nicely as I plan to trim them up to hopefully keep them more like street trees. Yesterday I planted 10 of the species seedlings ordered from Welker's Grove nursery along a small stream in our backyard. Looking forward to seeing what all of these trees look like in 10-15 years and beyond if we're still here. Either way, someone will get to enjoy them. I'll put chicken wire and mulch around them to protect through the winter and first year of growth. Wish I knew where to find a nursery that carried small Gold Rush trees. I only seem to be able to find them online or in our local nursery in larger sizes. These species seedlings are $5 each and arrived in great shape from Welker's Grove....See MorePlumeria Girl (Florida ,9b)
