Help me!! Should I add shutters or stain the front door??

Should I add wood shutters OR stain the front door a light, natural stain color? Any suggestion?? Landscaping will be installed in March. Please help!

Shutters that are correctly sized & look like they would cover the windows when closed, or even ones that actually do work with cool black hardware would look neat on your lovely home.

I think the door is painted so the staining ship has sailed. keep it white or chose a fun color! I think I see a lake behind the house? Maybe a blue to echo the lake.

Yours is one house that can support even the most outrageously "out there" color on the front door and still look good, given the uniform charcoal color. A stain (if you buy a new door to put it on) would be too tame. Shutters would improve its appearance in its present state, but if it were mine, I would be more likely to try to use plantings to soften and fill the gaps. It also might benefit from a much larger and more decorative light next to the door.

Thanks sombreuil_mongrel for your post. I didn't know that having wider bottom rails and narrow stiles was true Shaker. Good to know if we go with 3 inches on both the stiles and rails we will be craftsman style. I do like the look of the beefier frames. We saw that look in one high end kitchen and were very happy that Scherr's could accommodate that request. I checked the Scherr's site again and they offer a 5/32 diameter roundover profile (profile K) which is very close to your 1/8' diameter recommendation. Hopefully, that will offer enough paint chip and stain scuffing protection as mentioned by live_wire_oak. Carol

Agree with houssaon about removing the shutters. Keep the white fascia and trim and porch posts. Do you have a favorite bold color that you might want for your front entry door color rather than white? If so, you might also consider painting your white porch chair(s) that same color. You could add a post with a solar light and brackets for a pair of hanging baskets centered in front of the windows to the right beside your porch. You could add some plants around the post that will climb the post and provide colorful blooms. You might add a plain concrete bird bath to your yard. You could create a walkway to the bird bath with pavers with grass in between the pavers.

Nice house! I like the shutters, too. Without them, the house looks like an emoji face. Strictly my opinion. Color! While you're waiting for a landscaping plan, be generous with splashy annuals: maybe a couple of big tubs, and some colorful highlights in the bed along the ell.

I would add a black railing around the porch and up the steps. To me an enclosure to the porch and stairs looks welcoming. Lots of people, not only the elderly, appreciate a railing for safety even if it is not "needed" to comply with a building code. Replace your small black light fixture with a larger one. Yes to shutters, yes to awning. A simple fabric awning would look fine. Black is good. Repetition of a colour looks just as good outdoors as it does indoors. Plant more of the red flowers that seem to be doing well near your walkway. Red tulips in spring. Whatever suits your climate. Or spray paint your pots red, add a red bench etc.
