How would you disguise this?
Comments (18)Joy and Cj, thanks for the personal experience. It sounds like the right solution. Cary, I like the looks of that too, not too ornate and would blend in nicely. Cienza, jewelry rather than girdle, I like it. :o) Jakabedy, the plywood is quarter inch, I think. We probably need to use the same molding that will be used in the dining room, so everything will look uniform. All of the baseboards in there were removed for the tile install, so we have to replace them anyway. Would guys use white around the cabinets? We have white trim everything, door, windows, etc. I am thinking it would look strange to have wood stained around the cabinets and white everywhere else, plus the cabinet wood color would probably be impossible to match perfectly....See Morehow to locate holes behind installed cabinets?
Comments (6)Unfortunately, there is no easy way to find any holes. You would have to remove all cabinetry and inspect the area behind the cabinets to make that determination. Even relatively small cracks or gaps can allow cold air to flow. (For example, if you put your hand by a receptacle in an uninsulated wall, you can often feel air blowing out of the slots for the plug.) The two things I can think of that don't involve removing the cabinets are: 1) caulk anywhere you can see a gap on the inside; this also means pulling out appliances so you can caulk along the sides of the cabinets at the floor and up along the walls where the cabinets meet the wall. This is not an ideal approach, but is better than nothing. 2) In addition, have a qualified contractor blow insulation into the walls from the outside. They don't remove the siding; they blow the insulation in through 2" holes that they drill and then plug. This would not only cut down on leaks, but cut down on a lot of heat loss through the walls that happens independent of the leaks....See MoreHow to plug holes in cabinet doors
Comments (4)Thank you for your fast response. I am so sorry I didn't include enough pertinent details The doors are solid red oak, they are a deep what used to be called Spanish Oak (Minwax) stain. The finish is exceptionally smooth probably due to the years of beeswax I have used to polish the cabinets. Given the age of the cabinets, the finish is probably varnish as opposed to urethane. The grain of the wood is very defined and quite pretty. I do not intend to refinish them myself. There are many Amish furniture refinishers in the area who do amazing work. Several have done various refinishing jobs for me, but none I have queried have any idea except plugs. One Amish gentleman who refinishes gun stocks suggested using sawdust stained with a dark stain, mixed with glue, packed into the hole, allowed to dry and then sanded smooth. However, he is not interested in tackling 18 cabinet doors. And I'm sorry, I don't have a clue how to submit a photo here!...See MoreDisguising kitchen soffit
Comments (8)If you totally hate it, there are changes. Cut back the side wall to the backwall. Cut back the face and side of the soffit to take two doors, a side panel and hood extension made out of the cabinet material to match. Plus, any necessary trim at the ceiling....See MoreCor
