Most toe kick is not nicely finished on the top and bottom edges since it is meant to go underneath an overhanging part of the cabinet.

But failing that, I would consider a shoe mold if you do not like the idea of full baseboard. I think if you can get it color matched then either can look great. If you don't have fussy trim details I would recommend the simpler shoe molding. Here is a picture that shows both, baseboard on the left, shoe mold (or maybe quarter round) on the right. The only difference between shoe mold and quarter round is that shoe mold is usually narrower / taller, while quarter round is the same height and width.

Actually we used a shoe mold or a narrow trim piece with a simple radius top edge for a similar situation in my old kitchen with unlevel floor. It may be a good compromise without going to a full baseboard, I agree.

I don't think that would cover the entire bottom. :o)

We used some shoe mold around our bathroom vanity (same issue) and it turned out really nice!

Shoe mold here, too. It gives the installation a nice, finished look and covers up a multitude of sins. :-)

I have always like the look of this one. Its 1.25 x .5.

petra, we have base molding all around the kitchen; every place the cabinetry touches the tile. It does not look weird; rather, it looked unfinished without it. Depending on the style of your cabinetry, you could 'build' a trim or just use a piece or two to 'dress up' the look rather than disquise it! Think 'jewelry' rather than 'girdle' for your cabinetry.

I'll pile on to those suggesting shoe mold or quarter-round molding. How tall is that piece of plywood? We pulled out all the W2W carpet in our house and put in glue-down cork tiles. That meant that all the baseboards now had a huge gap. We found that the quarter-round and shoe weren't tall enough to cover the gap in some places, so we got either window stop or door stop molding (can't remember which now). It has a profile similar to the shoe, but is a bit taller. We painted it up and it worked great.

Jakabedy, the plywood is quarter inch, I think. We probably need to use the same molding that will be used in the dining room, so everything will look uniform. All of the baseboards in there were removed for the tile install, so we have to replace them anyway.

Would guys use white around the cabinets? We have white trim everything, door, windows, etc. I am thinking it would look strange to have wood stained around the cabinets and white everywhere else, plus the cabinet wood color would probably be impossible to match perfectly.

mmmmm, no I wouldn't use white moulding around the base of the cabinets. That would really draw attention to it. It's meant as a finishing transition from cab to floor, and I would match it as close as possible to the color of the cabinet.

I can't remember where your cabinets are from, but most manufacturers have all sorts of matching trim. I believe the piece you'd be looking for (a quasi-baseboard trim piece) is called "furniture molding"by my cabinetmaker. It DEFINITELY needs to match the cabinet, not the rest of the kitchen trim! But it'll look fine and intentional.

Petra- it would look weird to do white at the base of the cabinets. trim around the cabinets should match the cabinets, not the trim other places in the room.

HTH. I agree on the shoe molding by the way. I don't know where you got your cabinets, but the cabinet maker should be able to supply matching shoe molding.

I talked to the cab installer this afternoon (didn't know he was coming back today and thought we had to fix this ourselves), and he said he was planning to disguise that area with trim when he installs the island backing, and also use the same trim along bottom of the backing.
The cabs are Diamond Reflections Jamestown Light Cherry through Lowe's, I'll ask the guys if they have matching shoe molding if that is not what they are planning to use.

So glad the cabinet installer is going to take care of molding for you. One less thing to stress over. Make sure you show us the pics.

Stacie, I will, I'll add them to this thread if it hasn't dropped off by then. They have no idea when the island backing will arrive and what happened to it, it was supposed to be delivered with the rest of the cabs on Monday.
