Carpet, hardwood, or other flooring on upper levels?

We're trying to update an 80s house prior to move-in, and are stumped on several aspects of it. Here is a photo of the hardwood on the main level - it's everywhere except the entryway. I'm thinking it's stained red oak, does that seem accurate?

The entire and third floors have old carpet, some of it is beige, some mauve and some is dark blue. We want to replace it all, stairs, hallways, etc. We have an almost 4 year old and are about to have a newborn. We will also be painting the entire house, and plan to stick with a neutral palette that will transition well room to room, think Agreeable Gray or Classic Gray for most of it. All trim and woodwork will be painted white. Here are some photos:

Would you recommend trying to match the hardwood on the main level and carry through, or an engineered/LVT/laminate product, or a durable carpet like berber or nylon sisal or something like that? We don't want to go broke doing this because there are so many rooms that need redone, but also don't want to pick the cheapest thing and then have it not be as durable or tough to keep clean. Open to all suggestions, thanks!
