Different hardwood floors on second level and stairs

Hello All,

We currently have engineered golden oak distressed floors on the first floor of our home and carpet on stairs and second floor of our home. Please see picture attached.

We would like to install hardwood floors on the second floor of our home and the staircase. We are planning to go with a darker hardwood floor upstairs and on the staircase as we do not like the orange look to our floors downstairs. [we are looking at this as one of our options: http://www.californiaclassicsfloors.com/hardwood-flooring/PacificTreasures/Maple/PismoBeach-flooring.aspx]

We are concerned with how the different floors will look together and trying to figure out which option is the best.

1) We could replace the 2nd floor and stairs with the wood floor of our choice and potentially refinish the floor downstairs later (we would lose the "distressed effect" and create a lot of dust and the floors probably will not match exactly). We are not too keen on this idea.

2) We could replace the 2nd floor with the wood floor of our choice and just replace the carpet on the stairs.

3) We could replace the 2nd floor and stairs with the wood floor of our choice and paint the risers white or the color of the walls to break-up the difference in wood.

Which option is the best? Are there any other options I am overlooking? Appreciate any input!

JT
