In the meantime, here's some thoughts on redesigning your kitchen. (1) Have you spent time thinking about what does and doesn't work now and what you want to be able to do in the kitchen? Moving small pieces of paper around on a grid is so much easier/cheaper than real life! (2) Remember that moving sinks and dishwashers (that's a package move) requires moving plumbing. If you have a basement that provides easy access to the underside of your first floor, the process can be a little easier and definitely cheaper. If not, think really hard about that kind of move. (3) If your stove is moved to a new location, you need to also move the gas line or the 220 volt outlet if it's electric. Either move can be expensive. (3) Think about a bigger island if you want one. That little guy you've got there is too small for much of anything. An island big enough for the kids to eat breakfast on or do homework while one of you works in the kitchen is a godsend on those hectic mornings or evenings. It would also provide a natural barrier to keep young ones away from dangers like the stove and give you a walkway from the kitchen entrance to the laundry room or back door. Keeps folks out of the work areas of the kitchen.

Creating a new kitchen is one of the most exciting kinds of reno a homeowner can do. They truly are the heart of the home and can make our lives wonderful or miserable, depending on their design. Have fun!

From what I can see, it looks like your kitchen is approximately 14 feet by 16 feet? What are the three openings? Like if the opening on the left is opening #1--where does that lead? And the opening at the bottom of the sketch (#2) says 8 feet. Does it lead to another room? What about opening #3?

Were you thinking about putting the sink under the window or is that where it is now?

One thing you might try since you have measurements and window placement already done--there are online sites that have free kitchen design software.

I agree completely with Kathi Steele and Sina Sadeddin, Devin. The free online programs I mentioned can help you clarify your wants and needs. It can also help you see why certain ideas may or may not work. But when it comes to designing kitchens, professional help is a must, especially when you start moving around the basic elements like appliances and plumbing. Professionals are also particularly helpful when there are two (or more) decision-makers who don't necessarily have the same vision for the finished space.

No. They’re not even certified pencil pushers. They could have been watering plants last week. Hire someone real. Look under Hire A Pro for someone local. Or online, if you can provide good measurements and can assess electrical and plumbing and the nuts and bolts. You need to know who is going to do the hands on of jackhammering the slab to rearrange things, and all of the electrical needed. Moving things around is always challenging. And expensive.

To give the hardworking men and women at Lowe's and HD a little credit--they are pretty good at showing you your options in cabinetry and counters, custom add-ons like lazy susans for corner cabinets and drawer dividers, etc. Once you sit down with an actual kitchen designer, you will be much better prepared to discuss what you want. That saves time and money since she doesn't have to drag out of you what you like and don't like and all the things you want the kitchen to do.

Being on pier and beam foundation instead of concrete slab does not make things any easier (or cheaper) unless there's room for people to do work underneath. We're on pier and beam also, but there's barely 18" of clearance under our house and we pay a significant premium for getting work done in those circumstances.

In a concrete slab house we used to have all the plumbing lines (except waste pipes) were run through the attic to keep them relatively accessible. That saved us lots of money in plumbing repairs and re-locations.
