Needing help with Kitchen design plans
Comments (93)When we priced out MW drawers vs built-ins, they were the same. With the built-ins, you have to also purchase a trim kit, so the MW + trim kit = MW drawer price. A standard MW in an alcove in a tall oven cabinet would be less expensive and easy to replace when it dies. (I will say that my MW drawer has lasted longer than any standard MW I've had save one. The one that lasted longer was a "Montgomery Wards Convection MW" from the 1980s!) Regarding island seating: Each "seat" needs a minimum of 24" of linear space, some are now saying 30". So, that 9' island will only seat 4, max, on the long end Minimum recommended overhang for counter-height seating is 15". Skimping will not "save you space". People take up the same amount of room - they're just more uncomfortable b/c they have to lean over farther to reach the counter or they have to sit sideways (and take up more like 36" of linear space per seat) - neither position is comfortable for more than a few short minutes. Seats cannot share the corner. So, you either have one on the short side & 4 on the long side or 2 on the short side and 3 on the long side. You really need to increase the seating overhang to 15". If that means getting 21" deep cabinets facing the overhang, do it. In all honestly, anything deeper than around 18" under a seating overhang is difficult to access - I would actually say no deeper than 15". You can't use drawers or roll out tray shelves for most of those cabinets b/c the seating overhang would prevent you from accessing them. Shallow shelving is really the way to go....See MoreNeed help with kitchen design.
Comments (9)The master is above the kitchen. There is a step down to the sunroom and it is floor to ceiling windows. Photo of the kitchen from door to the mudroom. Photos of the sunroom and great room also. You can see the dining room through the door in the left of the kitchen photo and also from the great room through the sliding glass doors. The difference in light between the kitchen/dining room and great room/sunroom is striking. But the most logical space to open up is the kitchen/dining room because the dining room and hallway behind the fridge are 280 sqft in the middle of the house that are used just to get from one side of the house to the other. Groceries come in through the mudroom. I'll work on a first floor schematic....See MoreNeed help with kitchen design

Comments (13)removing windows and putting in a door is easier than vice versa. remove the brick, frame out the area for the door, install. if you want to bring up the floor level,(what do you plan on doing w/the fireplace? you would have to redo it and the book cases) for the new floor, they would have to lay joists, sub floor, and flooring to even it out to the other. At this point I would advise you to replace all of that white tile and do the same flooring throughout the first level. can you match the wood you have in the other room? .Oh, demo of all that tile? 1-2 K (can't see how much you have) remove a window and install french doors, about 2-4K. building a banquette? have no idea. 1-2K? new table, custom made cushions, etc. I don't mind the sunken part. I'd do the french doors and close off that other door by the nook. would be cool if you could extend that whole side of the house further out another 6-10 feet. I'd rather do that than raise the floor level. i'd also widen your stair area leading down. on the living side, you could do something like this w/stair sides (little built ins) install a cool beam above it: or move the stairs to one side If you replaced your windows w/doors, you could do one large sofa, and place the two chairs as you come down the stairs. (that's why it might be nice to move the stairs off to one side, gives you a bit more space. or try this layout. you may have enough room to walk behind the other sofa in front of the doors. (if you could bump out that wall another 6' or so, it would be perfect!...See Moreemilyam819
