Laundry Room Design Dilemma Kitchens

Need help with kitchen design and our design style

So I have alway thought of ourselves as designing a “Modern Farmhouse.” However after going through the design process for our kitchen, not sure if we are going that direction or more of a straight modern. We have selected a white shaker cabinet. And the cambria counter top pictured. The cambria has gold specs in it. So we selected gold pulls. We need to pick a backsplash to go with it. Any thought? I also included our proposed island in the blue tape, and my proposed change in the marker. I also included our new laundry room.

i don't have anything to say about the island, but your options for backsplash are pretty broad. presumably you want the dramatic counter to be the star, in which case your backsplash should play a supporting role -- white, or some cool gray taken from the stone veining. If you want something more unusual, bring in the interest by way of texture -- a shiny or iridescent white, say -- or tile shape -- like fan-shaped tile.

Agree with smm5525, the two inspirations pics are not really compatible. The LR would fit in perfectly in my traditional 1941 "colonial" house and the kitchen is more a 1990's "Mediterranean" genre. Neither are either tropical or beachy -- I am not sure what you are picturing in your mind's eye with those terms. The two spaces are going to be completely open to each other so they have to flow together smoothly. Also, they need to fit the style/era of the rest of your house! What is it like? You had mentioned that the kitchen would be "warm" and the great room/bar "cool" which, again, doesn't often work in real life when the spaces are juxtaposed like that. One or the other will always look "off" to you unless the colors are very carefully chosen and use a lot of mid range neutrals (colors that work with both warm and cool). I do like the color that you've chosen for the bar cabinets BTW. Find some more inspiration pics to clarify your overall looks and then call your ID soonest and get him/her working with you! You mentioned being on a timeline, but I strongly encourage you to have the whole project a bit more thoroughly planned out before anything is started.

Drawings of 2 of your possibilities- Take out the island, leave everything approx where it is, add cabinets to the interior wall. Take out interior wall from doorway on, assuming it's not load bearing, and add larger island, possibly with seating on 2 sides. You will have floor repair to deal with where the wall existed. I'm not thrilled with the way the existing pantry overlaps into living area where there's a different floor but this is how you have it and it does provide excellent storage. If you decide to keep it, I have turned it so you have access from the living room side and 'things' don't get lost in the back of a deep cabinet. I'm not sure that you see any more of the sink when you enter the space than the stove in either scenario, if that's a consideration. There could be other ways of configuring the choices. Your best bet would be to consult with a local pro and see what they have to suggest. Remember, kitchens can sell homes. Good luck with the project!

Thanks for the input. I was thinking near the same for backsplash. Though i do like the shaped tile. Maybe basic subway tile. I guess the question is, are our styles clashing? Originally going for more of a farmhouse look with the laundry room, but now the kitchen seems to be going more modern, i think?

Gold pulls don't seem modern farmhouse to me. Your stone choice is VERY bold. Have you seen the whole slab and figured out if the pattern will work with your layout? Something with that much movement can be sometimes hard to match depending on the configuration of the cabinets. One thing that's stands out to me is your mismatched flooring. What's going on there?

Yes. We tore up carpet, and put down laminate. They kitchen is going to be tiled.

The laundry room doesn’t say mod farm without you saying it. Your proposed kitchen seems more transitional or contemporary than mod or mod farm. I don’t think it will clash with the laundry room.

Thank you. Would it make sense to maybe go with some open shelving in the kitchen in a wood tone to mute the counter slightly? I love the counter top, but as stated, it is very bold.
