Comments (6)I think you can grow peppers in Kansas, but you might need to adjust when or where or how you grow them. I'm not an expert at this you should ask on the vegetable forum or maybe the texas gardener's forum and you will find people who grow lots and lots of different kinds of peppers, there is also an oriental vegetable forum they might know your specific type. From what I understand, blossom drop in tomatoes and peppers is caused by: -lack of pollination-if you grew them inside or you didn't have any bees around you need to shake the plants or tap the flowers to get the plants to pollinate so they will make peppers -not enough light-I think they need like 8 hours of full sunshine on them -or too much nitrogen (If you fertilized too much) -temperatures too hot or too cold, will fall off if daytime is above 90 F, or night time below 60F or night time above 75 F-I had this problem with my tomatoes this year, it was above 100F for so long that a lot of flowers fell off before the temperatures finally got cool enough for tomatoes....See MoreBall Blue Book Chili Sauce
Comments (25)An update - popped open a jar of our tweaked chili sauce tonight (we're calling it our "North of the Border" chili sauce - did another batch tweaking the spices to make a "South of the Border" flavor). DH's comment - "Don't you dare change a thing - it's gooood". I think it just needed some time to meld all the flavors back together. Weird how that happens - in the future I certainly won't start making notes on what to change without tasting it after being on the shelf for a couple of months....See MoreThai chili pepper variety?
Comments (18)@Leaf i dont work for bakers so i couldnt tell you. I hope not. I support and buy from bakers very often. check this out http://www.garden-of-eatin.com/how-to-avoid-monsanto/ this shows a list of seed suppliers that are know to work with monsanto or one of its subsidiaries , Tomato Growers Supply is one that they suggest you avoid. @DMforcier I am open for the argument that some GM'ed food is needed. The percentages of corn and soy beans that are GE'ed prove this point. Farmers like plants that dont die. However, it should be tested, safe, and properly labeled as such. Me personally, i have no trouble growing corn, i dont need virus and herbicide resistant corn. Those that do need it, are , generally speaking, strictly commercial. Im anti Monsanto due to there actions against other farmers. legal action against seed savers is wrong. Patent protection against plants, bleh. I dont want monsanto knocking on my door because I saved some seed. I also dont want to eat GM food with all the doubts of it being safe. I dont think that without monsanto we would all perish though. thats a bit of a stretch...See MoreOpinions on highest yielding HOT chili
Comments (52)> For sheer volume and total weight of peppers I had a Red Rocoto last year... A 2nd year Red Rocoto (from Reimer's!! & not a PI# from USDA) is my best ever single year (by weight) producer. Maybe a total of 70-80 pods. Doesn't sound like much compared to 15 gal of similar sized pods, but pretty darned awesome when compared to the total weight of any other species of capsicum. I've grown some baccatums that were very heavy producers the 2nd year too, but nowhere near the total weight of the rocotos. > Sure wish I knew what PI number it was as it's one tough pepper. Ditto! Second year rocotos can supposedly survive temps that kill everything above ground and still regenerate from the roots. Two days in a row of 25°F temps have always killed mine. One night of upper 20s & have had plants lose their leaves, but still survive. Mr Dutchman, you have grown the most awesome rocotos of anyone I have ever known. (a pod of 150 grams!) jt...See More- 8 years ago
