Excellenz von Schubert (above) gives me a very beautiful spring flush facing northeast. But virtually no re-bloom. I still think it is one of the loveliest old roses (early 20th c.) It really does fade to all different shades of lavender. Leaves are very nice, too, though this summer they were stressed with all the heat and moisture. This summer was frustrating, all the more because it looks to be the harbinger of many more. The three you mention, incidentally, are among my top favorites, though I admire them in other people's gardens than mine. I imagine Veilschenblau will be bullet proof in terms of satisfaction, also it is thornless. I know for a fact that it blooms in shade -- in a friend's garden. I think there was an Erinnerung an Brod blooming at my daughter's Waldorf school on Long Island, but not certain. It was a very purple climber in a spot overrun with trees and weeds but still chugging along. It is a hard choice. I like to believe Emily Dickinson grew Russelliana, which would incline me toward it, if nothing else. She wrote that she had Greville's rose and that was one of its names (Seven Sisters is also called Grevillea, though).. Below is a picture I took of a reproduction of Emily Dickinson's wallpaper at the Morgan Library in New York, and below that what I take to be Russelliana trained on trellis at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden this Spring. It gets big. Cannot vouch for shade tolerating abilities since I have only seen it in sun.

I've seen Veilchenblau blooming in shade in a church garden here. I have EaB and Russelliana in sun here, so no help.

Orpheline de Juliet blooms in filtered sun/ shade but everything else, that started getting too much shade, because of trees throwing long limbs in the sun, shading out the roses completely, did not do well. I wish I could be more help. I am now in the process of moving roses from the now shade garden to more sun. I can say Ballerina, was blooming very little when I moved her a week ago or so...that surprised me :) She was in pretty heavy shade, but IMO she wasn't as vigorous because of that.

I tried Veilchenbleu years ago in moderate shade and it did not thrive (Brooklyn NY, zone 6-ish). I had a Souvenier du Dr. Jamain which was amazing in light shade and repeated throughout the season. Now, post-house renovation I planted a new SduDr.J, which produced an amazing Spring flush, but no repeat. I get the sense (and read it hear on this forum) that roses can produce nice Spring flushes in shade, but repeat not so likely. Late summer black spot is pretty bad. I could never find Russelliana ... what a rose! Please let us know what you decide and how the roses do! FWIW, I have a Bourbon Queen which is doing quite well in shade and pending assessment on a late-spring-planted Chestnut rose and Lavender Lassie.

Not one you mentioned, but I would second the vote for Excellenz von Schubert, quite purpley here on a north facing bed, and after some years I get a nice series of bloom throughput the season, fragrant too!

A thread after my own heart! Marlorena,your G de Ducher is luscious! I have two potted ones and am wondering how best to place them; in my climate they seem much more prone to P Mildew than to BS.

ExVS is one of my all-time favourites,because of it's true saturated,deep lavender colour. Due to the fact that I can't irrigate and that our summers are so dry, I don't get much reliable re-bloom on any rose; I've come to regard re-bloom as sort of icing on the cake. For me, length of bloom season is more important.

Thank you all so much for your thoughts and suggestions! I am always asking my roses to stretch a bit, one way or another. It must be the teacher in my soul, scaffolding those under my care to reach just a little higher! Additionally, I have found that a number of roses can adapt to significant shade, and some deeply colored ones appreciate conditions which protect their blooms from direct sun.

Monarda, your experience with Veilchenblau in shade matches mine. I recommended it to Fogrose in years past as a shade tolerant cultivar but am unsure whether she tried it or how it performed for her.

Sheila, thank you for even more confirmation of Veilchenblau's shade tolerance and for the amazingly beautiful photos!! They capture everything I love about this purple rambler. Breathtaking! How are EaB and Russelliana behaving for you in sun? May I ask what you like best or not-so-much about each one?

Lee Ann, it is interesting that your Veilchenblau did not thrive in shade but others have. I am inclined to grow another in plant in shade and begin a thread just on Veilchenblau and forum members' experiences regarding degree of shade tolerance. Location, climate and immediate conditions deeply affect all living things, and I am reallly curious about the effects on the various "shade tolerant" rose cultivars.

Monarda, thank you for the wonderful photos as well! I love the side by sides of Russelliana and Emily D's wallpaper!! You have tapped my inner history and literature buff. I believe you may have nailed the cultivar on Emily's wallpaper which means, of course, that I MUST plant Russelliana in my garden! There is no frigate like a book...or an antique rose.

I am beginning to think that I also MUST grow Ex von Schubert! Monarda, Claire and Bart, thank you for your opinions on this classic lavender. I wonder how much remontancy Ex von S would demonstrate in my shady beds. Claire, maybe your climate is similar enough to mine to indicate ExvS's potential behavior in my garden. I like what you're saying about the yummy purple color and the fragrance! I am tempted to plant ExvS and find out if he can handle a bit of shade here.

I am also considering Verdi. A neighbor grows what I believe to be Verdi in quite a bit of shade. She gets a big flush and a few scattered blooms each year.

Marlorena, I am positively infatuated with your GdD! Those photos are swoon worthy!! Isn't this the rose that you once described as producing THE perfect shade of dark wine-red? I think you were also searching for others of that ideal color. Perhaps there are none which quite hit that special note? I am adding GdD to my shade list. I grow Souvenir du Dr. Jamain in shade, and in exchange for his sheltered placement, he offers blooms which remain velvety and unscathed.

Alana, you and I are the cross continent Queens of Purple, yes? I am growing OdJ in a pot in half day sun (morning only) and time will tell what kind of flush is produced. My two Gallicas which grow and bloom well in significant shade (no direct sun whatsoever and full on afternoon shade) are R gallica Officinalis and R gallica Versicolor. Those might be a couple to try in your shade garden? I also spotted a neighborhood plant of Sally Holmes growing and blooming in serious shade. She is amazing!

Carol I think your Orpheline de Juliet will do great in morning sun. Mine is in filtered sun all day and does great with that. The Japanese Rose is overthere in that shade garden and does fabulous. I did have to move both RM and AR from over there. ROSA Mundi did better out of the two in that area. I just moved them this fall so I hope they enjoy their new home. Will all the other stuff you mentioned do well in full shade with some very light filtered sun in one part and in another part of it a bit of afternoon sun? Whice would do better where? I do have two different kinds of hydrangea that I haven't planted yet but was under the impression that they liked some morning sun.

bart/ Carol, yes I love the colour of that rose, so rich, I'm glad you like it too. I think it looks better with some shade as in strong sun it gets a bit lighter. |ncidentally, 'Souvenir du Dr Jamain' is recommended for shade planting here too.

I've also grown some of the plants you list Carol, I think that's Brunnera 'Jack Frost'? I've got lots of those. Also those Euonymous and the Geraniums I've had before. A.T. Johnson used to be a big favourite with me, although I don't have it currently.

I'm surprised you don't have Geranium 'Patricia' I do think it's one of the best around, especially for shade and with plants of any colour. I still have some late flowers on it now, as it reblooms continually even after cutting back. I can't speak highly enough of it. I have it everywhere, even at the base of obelisks where it will semi climb like they do. Hope you like, I love talking Geraniums - well anything really.

Carol, E an Brod is wonderful here, but I need to support it better. It has lanky canes flopping about. Russelliana is also great here and makes a nice mounding shape. My Exc von Schubert didn't rebloom this past summer I don't believe, but I love it. Souv d Dr J rebloomed reliably. I have the sense all of these would do fine in part sun here. This is Russelliana.
