What can you tell me about Paul Barden roses?
Comments (8)My Paul Barden roses are all pretty young--less than 2 years old, so things will probably change as the plants mature. This has been my experience with them: Golden Buddha: a bloom machine, but check the photos on HelpMeFind. If you're expecting a yellow rose like the pictures at RVR, you might be disappointed. The color is described as varying with temperature--I've only seen apricoty-orange blooms on mine so far. Very pretty blooms cover the bush in flushes most of the summer--some balling in the fall. Had some pretty severe dieback this winter--1/2 to 2/3 of the canes died completely. Pretty healthy otherwise--I don't spray, and it was very clean until the rains started in the fall, when there was a minor amount of blackspot. Again, all these comments refer to young roses and things might change as they mature. Oshun: Didn't survive a spring freeze. Had a bloom on the band when I received it, and it smelled great--color was much paler than expected--maybe because it was just a young rose. When I pulled it up after it died, it had next to nothing in the way of roots--it might not be the fault of the rose, I might have gotten an inferior specimen. Jeri Jennings: A great rose so far. It's grown like a weed and has a very pretty arching form. Flower color has been variable from pale yellow/almost white to intense yellow to almost pink. Lots of blooms for a young plant. A little mildew late in the season--I'm hoping she'll grow out of it. Probably my second-favorite Barden rose so far after Marianne. Marianne: Very vigorous. Several blooms the first year. Color was variable, from cream-colored to the wonderful peaches and yellows shown in the best photos of this rose. No disease problem at all. May be my favorite of my Paul Barden roses. Fara Shimbo: A little slow getting started, and hasn't bloomed yet, but it looks like it's starting to get established. I have high hopes for this rose this year. A little powdery mildew--something it might grow out of--otherwise no problems. Carol's Favorite: Too new to tell. Planted last fall, looks like it got through the winter just fine. Mel Hulse: To new to tell. Planted last fall, looks like it's about to bust out in leaves any minute now. Just got bands of "Crested Damask" and "Dragon's Blood", and they look like healthy little plants....See MoreTell me about the Noisette rose La Biche 1832
Comments (36)My Mme. de Sombreuil came from Vintage in March, 2013. However, my rose has never had the overall flesh pink tone of the rose that you show, Jeri, from the Sacramento Cemetery Garden. It looks more like the rose "Legacy of the Richardson Family, which seems to be more of a shaded white. Of course location can make a difference, or temperature, so all three may be the same. It's a pity that Diane never posted a picture of her rose so that I could compare it to mine. In fact, I don't recall her having posted at all lately, which is a pity....See MoreWhat can you tell me about these roses pls?
Comments (14)Vettin, I grow most of these, and I can comment on some of them, if a variety is too young to comment on, I will indicate it: Baccara- don't grow Bouquet Parfait- very small 3-4 hours of shade, good bs resistance so far, accidentally mowed it because it is in a patch of vinca Condrad Ferdinand Meyer - don't grow Excellenz von Schubert- good resistance to bs, does better in full sun Field of Woods- very small, so far good resistance to bs, full sun Hermosa- BS nightmare, I dug it up this week...you want it? Cl Sdlm- fair BS resistance, some rebloom, does NOT ball for me....yet, but it does lose entire canes. Mme Gregoire Staechlin- totally defoliates, wonderful spring bloom, I am growing Paul Transon over it to cover up the nakedness...I think that MGS will bloom before PT Souv du Dr. Jamain- too small to judge..does not want to take off in my yard Robert...See MoreTell me about Generosa and Renaissance roses
Comments (3)I don't know that there is much accomplished by comparing different "brands" of roses. Each category will have beautiful roses that BS like crazy, others that suffer more limited amounts of BS, and a handful that truly are disease-resistant, or nearly so. The one exception I can think of is the more recent Kordes roses--which are being bred with disease-resistance as one of their prime characteristics--but there are other Kordes roses that are not. Even David Austin is paying more attention to disease-resistance in some of his more recent offerings. Most of his earlier ones are quite BS prone. But that is probably true, as a very broad generalization, about most roses out there on the market. Only recently has disease-resistance become important to the buyer--so many nurseries are now breeding for disease-resistance. With earlier roses (in general), that was not important to the buyer, so nurseries didn't worry much about it one way or another. Kate...See Moreportlandmysteryrose
