Under cabinet wiring -- small junction box
Comments (15)It's hard for me to visualize this as an inconspicuous solution and I'd like to understand this for the future. You don't think that stuff in the cabinets (how many cabs, btw?) will bother you? For example, if my guy told me he wants to put a couple j boxes under some cabinets for my clients, I envision big, ugly, metal boxes and I know they would go nuts. Alternatively, if he were installing some boxes "flush with the back of the cabinets", then I envision extra work, cost, holes (including recess in the wall behind cab), and at the very least, a little elbow in the cabinet that bumps into the dishes or whatever. Do you see what I mean? What am I missing?....or are these j boxes going behind the cabinets before they are hung? That's why I would think using wire mould under the cabinet would be the simplest, cleanest way to achieve the protection you need. But that's me. Not to cause you trouble or doubt, but I just don't understand this as a good solution for line voltage (as opposed to thinner , low voltage wire.) and I would like to understand it. (Sorry!) Thanks for the post. Please post pics and let us know how it works out. Good luck with everything. Comments (5)My sparky said to just run it out from the wall along the cabinet underside to the UC lighting, and staple it in place. Your thinking is correct -- you won't see it any more than you will see the light fixture. I just checked the code, and verified that NM is allowed for exposed work. It just needs to be supported (i.e., stapled), protected from physical damage, and must "closely follow" the building surface. Bottom of a cab is fine. For strain relief, you can use a "black button" rather than the BX shown below. Comments (6)Unfortunately if the Bx wire was short then yes, a junction box is required and needs to be accessible. Not sure why the Bx was short or if he's dealing with existing wiring. You might notice it now because the work was just done but I'm sure that once you stack your items in the cabinets you're not going to notice it unless if like the previous comment mentioned if you have glass doors....See Morewhat to do with this big unsightly junction box???
Comments (6)That is a BRILLIANTLY clever suggestion @User, thank you!!! I was also groaning at the thought of having the plugs themselves taking up space - but it felt like a better concession than the whole junction box!! This is just great!! As to my contractor, he left me with many surprises along the way. For tasks that feel manageable, like this one, I'd rather do it myself before calling him back. I've gotten quite good with the spackle :)...See Morebwspot
