How did you provide adequate lighting for your stairway
Comments (8)pps7 - My stairwell has a similar configuration. We haven't broken ground yet, so these are just ideas I was considering... 1.) sconces 2.) find a way to get a window to the outside...I can't do this.... In my plan, the staircase is in the middle of the house, which will make it dark --- however, in the upstairs, one room over is a room with several dormers. I found a beautiful old church window with large panes of handblown glass (looks seedy a bit and distorted, but beautiful proportions. I am considering putting this window in the back wall (at chandelier height) to let in light from the adjacent room. I wouldn't do it with any old window, but with the right type of window, it could be nice (I don't know if this will work, but my stairs are exactly like yours and I am going to play with this). 3. Can lights over the landings (you've covered this, but they will be pretty high, so wouldn't count on much light). 4. This reminds me of your set up, just thought I'd post the picture --- Mark Finlay - New Canaan (think his homes have beautiful details) This set has a bit more clearance to allow a chandelier, and if I remember (you posted a beautiful stone house a while ago), a fussy chandelier might not be your thing anyway. Maybe a lantern? This is one in the Williamsburg Inn -- always loved it...picture is a bit dark in the staircase though (suppose this is proof that it is not enough light)! I'm thinking about a lantern like this repeated in the corridors, or maybe a bell jar... Or... instead of a traditional sconce, maybe one of these flatback types (can't remember what they are called)... Anyway, just a few ideas. Please post pictures of what you end up with!...See MoreHow to furnish this small loft space for a bedroom?

Comments (14)Arcy - I 100% want a custom gate like that. My children are small enough to fit limbs and heads through the spindles. They don't, but they could. 5 1/4" between spindles and 6 1/4" open between treads (yikes). We plan on more children so it would be a continuing problem... Thanks for bringing up the cost/aesthetics/value balance. Good thought Patricia - thanks for thte thoughts. The problem is there aren't a lot of specialists in my area, just a lot of GCs and new build developers. Other pros in the area seem to be geared toward commercial projects as well. I do need to know how much my problem COSTS before I can budget for it hah. A handrail seems easy enough though. Lorraine - I do have the kid stuff underneath the stairs - out for the world to see. I'm definitely leaning toward a redo....See Morehoovb zone 9 sunset 23
