Comments (29)Riverspots, thank you for your suggestions. I'm still looking for flooring. My current floor is fairly light, but the tiles are small. I kind of wanted to go with a larger tile, but more of a medium shade as it hides the dirt better. This is predominately gray and rust. The tiles are 15 inch. I would stagger the panels to get more of a brick design This is a light brown, not my favorite, but looks like it would camouflage dirt. The tiles are oblong with a square one thrown in there. There is a lighter option to the right. I like this one but it may be too busy. The tiles are 12 inch. It could also be staggered. Thanks for the paint suggestion. I feel the cabinets and woodwork already are in the orange family so don't know about adding more orange. I had this paint already, thought I'd give it a try. l-r oiled soapstone, pearl soapstone, canyon passage, luna shadow, deepstar bronze-The soapstones are a matte finish, the others are HD with a mottled glossy finish I looked at solid surface and granite yesterday at Home Depot and for my little kitchen $2500! Don't know if I'm that brave....See Morechanging carpeted stairway to wood.
Comments (12)"wood under carpet is real cheap pine that is in poor shape, so it can't just be stained." Not always. I had pine under mine and painted them. Do you know what's undeath the carpet? We had a local flooring guy remove the carpet and staples and I painted the treads a dark brown (SW Woodsy Brown) and the risers white. Looking back, I wish I would've used General Finishes Gel stain, but that's another story. The link Bonnie posted above was the first person I thought of. Thriftydecorchic did her stairs as well. My treads looked like this when the carpet was up. Reading what you wrote again, I don'y think my link is very helpful at all. Could you post a photo showing the top of the stairs where the flooring is? I'm having a hard time picturing what you're saying. At the top of our stairs we have an oak landing tread and carpet buts into that. (Our railings are all oak) Doing a quick search, this is what ours looks like. http://www.directstairparts.com/collections/wood-treads/products/lineal-landing-tread-3-1-2-per-lf?gclid=COudpO6tocECFQQT7AodY34A3w Here's a photo. Comments (59)Well said palimpsest, and I agree. Its exactly why I am looking to learn more about the house and going to live in it while making my decisions. I don't want the kitchen to look like it does now 1983 nor do I want it to look like so many of todays kitchens....I will find my inspiration. Choosing materials for counters and backsplashes/fireplace will be challenging. I can't afford to come in with all new remodel and furniture so will have to work with what I have as I progress. Here is part of the master bedroom as it looks with current owner, I am hoping to find a bed very much like this one. This floor will have to wait until the kitchen level is done tho. I love and appreciate all the information, opinion and ideas. thank you....See MoreHow to update 80's home foyer ledge?
Comments (14)Our vacation home had one of those very large round top windows over the front entry double doors, and a double height ceiling. We ultimately decided to make the entry one-story high, replaced the double doors with a single door and side lights, and added a second story office with an appropriately sized window (no round top.) It was worth the $$ to change out the 80s-90s trend to a more classic look. You might consider saving up to make a more substantial change at a future date....See MoreJoseph Corlett, LLC
