OT - One knee down; one to go.

They sprang me from the hospital this noon. The surgery was Monday. It is so hard to believe - the doctors totally destroy your knee and then rebuild it and you're walking on it the same day. This was so much easier than I had anticipated, although I realize I'm far from recovered yet and complications can arise. But the scary part is over. I had great pain control. I reached maybe a 4 out of 10 for about a half hour. Mostly I've been in the 1 to 2 range or less. I came home and walked up 14 stairs with a cane and no problems. Now I just have to strengthen my new knee so I can get the second one done on October 30. I know it must be like childbirth - no two are the same - but it's nice to have the first one go so well. Larry, I don't think you sound like a jerk. The deer can be a huge problem if they are eating plants you don't want them to eat. We don't hunt them, but I'd never quarrel with anyone else's right to do so....as long as they aren't hunting them on our property. I love the deer and we don't shoot them. They have struggled so hard to survive here this year and were so thin all summer long. We've been feeding a lot of deer since June, and have a feeding area where we put out food for them, have two food plots planted for them, and have waterers out for them. The regular herd consists of 8 to 11---they don't always come in one large group, sometimes they come in a couple of smaller groups. And, then, there's more transient deer that come in small groups of up to about 4 or 5. Bucks often come alone. I have no doubt that hunters will kill the deer on the property to our north, west and south where hunting is allowed, but people ask to hunt on our land all the time and we say no. I feel like the deer should have some place where they can live without being killed. Do they drive me crazy in terms of eating plants I don't want them to eat? Yes, they do. I just plant everything they like to eat inside the veggie garden, which actually has a mixture of veggies, herbs and flowers growing within it every year. It has a 9' tall fence to keep the deer out. In the remaining unfenced areas of the yard, I just plant stuff the deer don't eat, or at least seldom eat. It isn't a perfect solution because sometimes the deer surprise me and eat plants that they normally won't eat, but that's only in the worst of the drought years. When we bought this land, we knew we only "needed" a small portion of it upon which to live and garden. We just figured we'd leave the rest of it in its natural state and encourage the wildlife to stay there. That mostly works, but you know, there's always nuisance wildlife that comes up to the house, barn, orchard and garden area, and with the nuisance wildlife, we shoot them. For us the nuisance wildlife includes raccoons because they kill our chickens, skunks for obvious reasons, and bobcats and coyotes. I'd rather chase off those last two than kill them, but if they keep coming back and killing our animals, we'll kill them too. For you, deer are a nuisance animal and I understand that. For me they would be a nuisance animal if I didn't have a fenced garden that excludes them where I can grow the plants that they like as much as we do. People here normally hit a lot of deer in the roads at night at this time of year. There's just so many poorly lit, rural roadways where the deer enter the roadways with no warning for the drivers and you cannot see them until it is too late. This year, beginning in about late July or early August, there have been oodles of livestock accidents, mostly involving cows in the roadway but sometimes horses, goats, pigs, or donkeys. It has been just horrible. So far, there's been more livestock-vehicle accidents than deer-vehicle accidents and they can tear up cars even more than the deer do. I just think the drought has sent the livestock through, over or under fences looking for greener grass elsewhere, and with the drought, there hasn't been greener anything anywhere until the last month or so. A couple of years ago deer were hit and killed in the road right in front or our property 2 or 3 separate times within maybe a 6 week period. My dog, Jet, is very sensitive to that area of the roadway to this day and when you take him for a walk and he gets close to where the deer died, he wants to turn around and go the other way. Good luck with the frontline and Henry! If you ever need to give him a pill ( I hope he stays healthy and you dont :) ) ask your vet for Pill Pockets. They are hollowed out ,oval shaped cat treats, that are soft and chewy in texture. You put the pill inside and sqeeze the end closed. My cat LOVES them. He was on medication for an ear infection and my vet gave me a bag of these pockets. We left them on the kitchen counter overnight.....big mistake because he tore through the bag, and I had to go back to the vet the next day and buy another bag!

Cozy - Kid Friendly. Mixed room use I suppose. Kids dungeon and secondary media room. Paint should be on the lighter side of coziness and not too dark-cozy. There is the white quartersawn stairs, with the walnut built in running that bank of the wall. Add the flooring and that is lot of wood to contend with. Aside from the custom cabs being built, all the other furnishings was sorta dependent on paint - the upholstery at least. I know ya'll have said you can always repaint, but I'm more the latter. For example, the built in that is running underneath the stairs, the top 1/3 of it is open cubed shelving. Whatever paint I paint it now, will be the color that is there till it get's ripped out or professionally disassembled. You will be able to see through this open shelving. I suppose I could hire someone with long arms and is flexible to repaint between the open spaces. Same goes for the furniture. It will probably be a large sectional with chaise and 2 or 3 chairs - upholstry tbd . If ya'll are wondering what's up with the tiled floor - we got flooded, I ended up ripping 10" Wide Plank flooring and lower 2' of rock. I don't want the space to feel like a waterproof pool with the new tiled floor ;-)

Your experience sounds very similar to my surgery May 22, Lois! I could not believe that I was pain free after 10 plus years of a very bad knee. I had very little pain from the surgery also - only needed a few pain meds at home and none after one week. By week 3 after surgery I was walking with no cane or walker. I saw my surgeon on Aug. 31 and he said I was doing so well, I didn't have to come back until my one year anniversary in May 2018.

Take all the PT that you can and your new knee will be stronger with each exercise! I was amazed at how competitive I was with myself when trying to reach the next goal in my PT.

I now consider myself to be the walking poster person for "get that new knee sooner rather than later." LOL!

WOW, congrats on your speedy recovery. I'm amazed at how soon people are recovering from these surgeries nowadays. Especially knee and hip replacements. Good for you and I hope the next is the same.

Lois, I didn't know you were having knee surgery! I'm glad it went well and wish you a speedy recovery.

My rotator cuff surgery was outpatient - I went home as soon as the anesthesia wore off. I would say my worst pain level was day 2 after the nerve block wore off, and it went to about a 5 out of 10. Still recovering, though - building up my strength and trying to get 100% range of motion back.

Lucky you to get it done when you are in general good health. Both of my knees are painful but my Dr. Isnt that keen on repair work. Maybe I need a new Dr. Keep up the pt.

Wow! That's great to hear. I'd heard some scary and some great stories about knee replacement but most of them are better off after the surgery than before, I guess.

Good news - very happy for you.

I can't say how many of our customers told us that they wished they'd have had the knee surgery sooner. They'd put it off & put it off from fear and were very happy once it was done.

Theresa, we have a friend who needed back surgery. The drs up here in Indiana wouldn't do it because of her age. She is a snow bird and the dr in Florida said he could do it. He did and her back pain is gone. He works on older people all the time in FL, so is more proficient and confident at it, I guess.

I think what I have to do is go in and cry and cry and cry, my knees hurt. Maybe then he will hear me.

Theresa, is your doc saying your general health isn't good enough for surgery? Or is it just your age? My stepdaughter had trouble finding a surgeon because she was too young - late 40's. They said she was too young for the surgery. She finally found a doc who said she was too young to be living in such pain. She's had them both done now, and she's so pleased. She had ruined her knees by water-skiing and downhill skiing.

My leg is so swollen, it looks like a tree trunk. The doc said she's not surprised. She had to do a lot of bone spur removal which causes a lot of trauma, I guess. PT is tough with all the swelling, but I'm working on it. I can walk without a cane or walker. Pretty amazing. Thanks, everyone, for your well wishes.

Lois, my coworker had knee surgery (just a clean out, not replacement) and her doc was a woman, too. Interesting.

Thanks Lois! But I think I haven't been loud enough in my complaints. For an 84 year old, I am in quite good health. Next visit "hear me roar".

Theresa, one of my golf buddies is 82, and she had a knee replacement last January. She played golf all summer. Go for it!

Donna, when I went to see my doctor worried about the extent of the swelling, she was so kind. She held my leg so lovingly, exclaiming over how straight it was, albeit swollen. She was really proud and happy with her work, you could tell. It reminded me of how I might feel about one of my quilts.
