The extra large cushioned bench in this dining nook shouts Alice in Wonderland to me with its whimsical charm and cozy appeal. Wouldn't catching up with a dear friend over tea in this corner be divine? The bench gets your attention, but the other elements of the dining nook feel subdued and natural for a nice balance.
Here's another dining area that feels very charmed and Alice in Wonderland-like due to the use of oversized armchairs as dining chairs, large drum light pendants and oversized mirror. The use of symmetry and the minimal black and white palette works well in this room, too. The size of the rooms' components do so much work, no need to muddle it with color.
This room feels grand due to the play with scale. Large artwork hangs alongside an impressively sized chandelier. Take a closer look: its neither of these elements that are oversized. It's the extra wide dining table that gives the room its massive feel. Pairing large items with even larger items can work.
The use of one extra large and low coffee table not only functions as a place to set down cups, it also acts as an informal and rather incognito divider between two seating areas in one large room. Very clever.
We all know mirrors can make rooms feel bigger by reflecting light and adding the illusion of more space. An oversized mirror in the bedroom feels decadent and does the job of doubling the appeal of the luxe drapery and lounge chair.
When you do hang a large mirror in the entry hall, think of including an oversize object d'art or accessory as an instant conversation starter upon entering the home. This large green ball sculpture adds a splash of color and texture in one easy gesture.
Bringing an upholstered headboard as high as you can go, almost to the ceiling, is a way to harness the trend without being too overt.
Let's look at lighting. This lighting pendant is large. Very large. What do you think? Is it too large, or just right?
Ikea has done a good job of offering an oversized pendant such as the Maskros light without taking itself too seriously. Designed to look like a dandelion, it is large, but the transparency allows it to blend into the room and feel airy.
The Moooi Random Light is a nice option if you want to experiment with the trend but not go too big. It is a design classic that will never feel too trendy.
Another good place to play with oversized lighting is outdoors. This exterior light is very large for the seating area it illuminates, but in accordance with the rest of the house, it doesn't feel oversized. You get the best of both worlds with this placement of an oversized element. It's fun and trendy but also pretty safe.
