Replacing Heat Pump - Advice??
Comments (6)Thanks for the quick responses! Both contractor didn't measure the house or use a Load Calculator, but both did offer to have it done if I really wanted one. I can understand their unwillingness to do a Load Calc test if they aren't guaranteed to get the job. They both used the the Square-Footage rule to come up the size of the unit. Both approximated about 550 sqft per ton. I did download a Load Calc program called "HVAC-Calc Residential 4". I ran thru it and plugged in all my house data (room sqft, window info...etc), it took me about 2+ hours to go thru the whole process. Granted I didn't know how to exectly answer every question (being a non-HVAC guy), so I used the default setting for the items I was unsure about. I can see why most dealers would charge for this up front. ;-) The HVAC-Calc program came up with a recommended 3 ton unit, but again, I not sure I have correctly entered all the data. If you guys would like I can post back the results, just let me know what figures you would like for me to post. As for a series related question...What's the major differences between the Preferred and Legacy lines?? Is it worth approximate 500 bucks to jump up to a Preferred from the Legacy series?? Thanks again for your advice!...See MoreSmart or foolish to replace 20 yr heat pump that still works
Comments (35)Thanks Tigerdunes. I stopped by the distributor of Heil today and he said this was a great combo as far as efficiency and said he would not recommend a higer SEER or 2 stage compressor, even from Heil as you would never recoup the costs. Also said to get the VS air handler as this combo will qualify for the $300 energy rebate due to the good efficiency ratings. Surprising but since the Trance XL15i does not get 13 EER it does not qualify for the $300 so that makes my difference $2100. At this point the Heil is the clear winner. not sure why what you have says discontinued but the dealers sells these all day long and I assume he would have told me this since I know them. Thanks for your input. We are actually going to add 3 registers in the lower level to help with heating this space. We have1 return that is in between both floors. Another contrator came out today and said I needed 38000 for cooling and 48000 for heating. In between a 3.5 and 4 ton which is consistent with the others. We have a lot of glass, face south, 7 skylights and avg ceiling height of 12'. He thinks 3.5 in/out was best solution especially since I told him I shut off most of the lower level registers in the summer as it is always cooler. Comments (22)ryanhughes, The Trane setup with 80% 2-stage Var and 13 SEER, plus indoor cased coil, new thermostat, equipment pad, 4" media filter and labor comes out to $6077. The Goodman setup with 95% 2-stage Var and 16 SEER, plus Cased Indoor coil, new thermostat, equipment pad, 16x25 MERV 11 Air filter and labor comes out to $6098. (Special friend discount) The EverRest setup, which I am not considering anymore. 80% 2-stage no variable speed and 13 SEER, plus coil, thermostat, CAP-100 filter and labor is $6957. TRANE vs Goodman. Trane probably has a better reputation, but in my scenario I may go with the higher efficient Goodman. I'm not 100% sure yet, but definitely getting there....See MoreHeat Pump only or dual fuel?
Comments (14)Tim: If I'm understanding this correctly, you can only get $1,500 max for your tax credit (even if you buy two units), and if I'm understanding these Carrier salesmen who are giving me estimates, the tax credit reduces your taxable income by $1,500. The true amount of cash savings that you realize at the bottom line of your tax return might be only half of that (it all depends on your tax rate). I would ask for a copy of the ARI (Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute) certificate that shows that the entire unit, breaking down each piece that when installed together makes your system, qualifies for the tax credit before you put any money down. Only one of my four estimates came with a copy of a ARI certifcate showing that it qualified. The rest just didn't provide the evidence that the unit they were proposing met the tax credit requirements. You don't want any surprises next April, especially if you are really depending on that money....See Moresktn77a
