Day 7, My House in August: Table
Comments (51)April, thanks for your appreciation of the light fitting!! It was obviously meant to be - about five years ago when living in our last house (Wiltshire, England) we saw three of these lights - varying sizes - in a flower shop in the nearest town. DH and I both fell in love even though it was a bit contemporary for our tastes, lol! The lights weren't for sale but were fixtures in the shop. We asked where they'd been sourced but no-one seemed to know. A few months later DH was trawling a car boot sale (weird English Sunday pastime, ha ha!) and spotted *our* light across a field full of cars. It was acquired for the princely sum of £15 :)...See MoreDay 11: My House in August " Shelfie"
Comments (26)We're still in the midst of moving in and unpacking. My sweet hubby unpacked a lot of boxes yesterday and did his own arrangement on the shelves of the huge dining room built-in incorporating a lot of things that were displayed in small groups in various places in our old house. Bless his heart, it looks like a showcase in an antique mall. I know I want to do it much differently, but have no idea where to begin. I'll probably add a lot of books and be back here for advice on this one. The second pic is my little collection of 1939 New York World's Fair collectibles. Something about that fair just speaks to me. I'm drawn to its vision of the future, and it's the year my parents were born. There are also a few other World's Fair/Expo pieces thrown in for good measure. Also in that pic a peek at the built-in bookshelves in my office. They'll only hold fairly short books (must be all anyone had in 1954). I've got to go through all the book boxes this weekend and figure out where it all goes....See MoreDay 17- My House in August: Paint
Comments (31)Well, as most of you know by now, every wall in our adobe home is painted the same warm cream color. Very pretty from my point of view, but very boring to feature on this thread (LOL)! And, our doors, inside and out, are all unpainted as well. Hand crafted, but still plain old wood color. Our wood furniture is (yep, you've got it) stained, not painted for the most part. So, here is one of the fireplaces in our home. It's called a kiva (KEY-va) and they are very common out here in New Mexico. Three of our four fireplaces are kivas, and one day I just got a wild hair of an idea to paint a design on this one in our family room (the one in our MBR is painted the same color as the walls, while the kiva on our front portal has the same stucco as the exterior does, a dark tan, with embedded Talavera tiles around it's opening). Anyhoo, I painted my fireplace by hand one day while DH was a work. I used new kitchen dish sponges, that I cut into concave and convex shapes to get the smoke pattern the way I wanted, As for the primitive Indian petroglyph animal designs along the hearth, I ended up painting them freehand, lying on my side on our very hard brick floor. Ugh! But, all these years later, I still love my painted kiva. BTW, the first pic show the things I have on the mantel now....See MoreDay 21 - My House in August: Light It Up
Comments (21)That's a good idea, Cyn! I have a lamp shop that I've used for years, but never thought to ask them if they know of a person who could make me a new shade using my original frame. I've just looked for replacement shades there, and had my lamps repaired. Thank you for that suggestion. I'm going to call them tomorrow! Speaking of my lamp place, about 20 years ago I had them create this lamp (below) as a surprise Father's Day gift for DH. I found the statue of St. Roc, the patron saint of physicians, in an antique shop. As DH is a physician, I thought it would make the perfect gift for him. (Sigh) He was not as thrilled as I'd hoped he would be, to say the least. Being raised Catholic, I've been around saint stories my entire life. But, DH, who was raised Southern Baptist, was not. To him, it just looked like an old man, hoisting up his robe to point at a cut on his leg. Not! But, over the years, living here in New Mexico and with a Catholic wife, he's come around a bit. St. Roc is proudly displayed on the buffet in our dining room. And, I still love him!...See MoreLynnNM
