Day 6, My House in August: Colo(u)r Pop!
Comments (41)IdaClaire, I live about 25 miles outside of Houston. My husband is a collector. We have a lot of stuff not normally found in a home (like the toucan that he put on an old stand). It was a kiddie ride in its former life. I try to utilize as many of his "finds" as I can without it being too much. It's a compromise. I would probably pare a little of it down. He would have more....See MoreDay 12: My House in August "Favourite"
Comments (16)Thanks, Bonnie_ann! I am fortunate to have a Polish deli about 10 minutes from my house, so that is great for holidays. People drive from neighboring cities to shop there. They have incredible varieties of Polish sausage. I am one of the few in there who doesn't really speak Polish. We did our kitchen around 2009-2010 so I posted a lot of photos then. We have blue pearl granite and then the mosaic glass BS. I put the stainless inserts in behind the stove. Yes, I did the backsplash, not really knowing what I was getting myself into. But the mosaics were on mesh-backed sheets, and the few tiles I needed cut I was able to take back to Lowe's and they did it for me. We just got a new Elextrolux induction since the Samsung induction cooktop died and could not be repaired because the parts were no longer available....See MoreDay 17- My House in August: Paint
Comments (31)Well, as most of you know by now, every wall in our adobe home is painted the same warm cream color. Very pretty from my point of view, but very boring to feature on this thread (LOL)! And, our doors, inside and out, are all unpainted as well. Hand crafted, but still plain old wood color. Our wood furniture is (yep, you've got it) stained, not painted for the most part. So, here is one of the fireplaces in our home. It's called a kiva (KEY-va) and they are very common out here in New Mexico. Three of our four fireplaces are kivas, and one day I just got a wild hair of an idea to paint a design on this one in our family room (the one in our MBR is painted the same color as the walls, while the kiva on our front portal has the same stucco as the exterior does, a dark tan, with embedded Talavera tiles around it's opening). Anyhoo, I painted my fireplace by hand one day while DH was a work. I used new kitchen dish sponges, that I cut into concave and convex shapes to get the smoke pattern the way I wanted, As for the primitive Indian petroglyph animal designs along the hearth, I ended up painting them freehand, lying on my side on our very hard brick floor. Ugh! But, all these years later, I still love my painted kiva. BTW, the first pic show the things I have on the mantel now....See MoreDay 27 - My House in August: Leaves
Comments (15)Bromeliad leaves (these are the most decorative I have, I think):These are all bromeliads that I grow for their leaves - others I grow for their flowers. This one I grow for both:but the flowers do not last as long as other bromeliad flowers, but I do grow it most for its leaves.Almost forgot this one; it's called Vriesea Mint Julip, or at least that's how it was labeled when I bought it. One more - in my front yard; Agave Furcraea macdougaliiThis agave is already over 20' high, and it is quite a bit larger than I was led to believe it would get. I've had it since May 2010, and it is supposed to take 20-25 years to bloom. I may not still be in this house by that time. The flower will double the height of the plant as it is now. This is supposed to be the tallest agave in existence, and it is native to Oaxaca. I do not see many of these around, possibly because they take up so much space....See Moreaprilneverends
