Need advice on best mirror/sconce option in small master bath
Comments (20)Cbusgirl41:. Sorry for the delay in my answer. My vanity is 72" wide and inset into a nook. The thing that threw me off in my planning was that I didn't plan on having to align the sinks into the middle of the base cabinets, not getting to choose where to place them on my own, so that was why I ran into the same side sconce alignment challenge you are facing. In the close up photos, you can see my 36" wide frameless mirrors are slightly offset from the center of the sinks (again, the sinks!!!!) Apparently, the lesson learned and advice for everyone is to be mindful of the sinks!! Nothing that a few strategically-placed accessories can't fix! The frameless option with the arch gives it sort of the pivot look without the extra baubles. I was going to frame oval custom made mirrors, and, in the end, I love the simplicity of what I now have. I do NOT have supplemental overhead lighting in the vanity area; however, those on a dimmer would have been a nice addition. It's not a problem, because even at night, I have plenty of light and it's rather soothing. Plus, the drywall was already in and finished so I didn't want to have more extras! There is a lighted, heated fan light over in the middle of the room by the shower/tub combo which is to the right when looking from afar towards the vanity. May_Flowers: I am personally obsessed with the side sconces for their ability to "flatter" now that I am reaching a certain age ;-) I am trying to add photos (hopefully not upside down this time!). Hope you can read the dimensions and see the scale. The tape measure in the photos starts at the left wall....See MoreHelp needed with the aesthetics in our master bath!
Comments (38)Is there space for two sinks? I made that layout with Word and couldn't read the numbers well, so it's far from exact. You'd have to do the math. What I do know is that with one sink you'd have ample drawer storage, and with two you'd have near to none. I have to have my toilet in a closet...as a mom, I would never be able to go to the bathroom by myself. Respectfully, a toilet in a closet isn't something anyone "needs". I think this layout has the same problem as the original: It isn't balanced. Your major players are all cramped together, while you have oodles of empty space in the middle. Beyond that, you can't walk through the half bath, and you don't really want an outswing exterior door ... so that part doesn't work at all. I still think though it's worth working to get at least a powder room that's for the pool. A powder room for the pool ... attached to the master bath ... is a very good idea. Everything in life is a trade-off. There is rarely a perfect solution. Most ideas will have both pros and cons. Yes, and when you're determined to have things "just right", it's easy to lose sight of this....See MoreKitchen Dilemma - Awkward Layout, Several Possible Solutions
Comments (23)divingcardinal, they have these things made out of cloth called "curtains". You pull them closed when things get too shiny. Or this other weird thing called a "blind" that goes straight up and down. Also very effective at blocking the light sometimes while letting it stream in unimpeded at others. To the OP - while the idea of enclosing the porch isn't horrible, it really doesn't look all that wide, enough to make it practical as a laundry room, unless you could put stacked units at the far end. Not sure where that is in relation to the window, which I absolutely WOULD NOT want to lose in the kitchen. However a better solution seems to me to be to fix the basement stairs. If they are SO narrow and/or shallow that a young person such as yourself wouldn't feel safe going up and down them with a basket of laundry, they're too narrow/shallow to be safe in any case. I would rather invest the reno money in fixing those stairs, give them a landing and a turn if necessary. I don't know what kind of space you have down there but if the stairs are as bad as you seem to imply, you won't use that space much, if at all. Plus I would worry about little kids and steep/narrow stairs. I'm 60 and if I had a basement that is where I would want the laundry area to be. Preferably with a built in floor drain. That would give me the space to have an actual laundry tub for the washer to drain into instead of those stupid little plastic bins they mount behind the drywall these days. Plus, laundry tubs are SOOOO useful for so many reasons. Even if they are in the basement....See MoreAwkward master bedroom layout
Comments (14)I like the bed centered with the fireplace. It tucks it more on the other side for walkways and has less view from the entry. As far as the window seat, I think they're a lovely feature, but how often will you truly sit there? Maybe in a common room where kids are, it would be more likely to be used. In your bedroom, I'd rather have a comfortable chair next to the window to sit and read a book while enjoying the nice fire.:) Will you be needing a place for a dresser in your bedroom or will all the clothes be stored in your closet? I would measure and take into account where any furniture will be placed, so not to be surprised when moving in. Some other thoughts - the her closet looks to have access to the laundry which will be a great feature. But it would be really nice if the his closet had the same. -agree on bedroom 2's closet-that will be hard to access, but a great hiding spot for kids dirty clothes-;) -in your master bath you won't have a lot of counter space. I'd rather have one sink and some drawer storage and a full sized linen closet within. Also, the double doors aren't particularly practical. We've had these in the past and found them to be awkward and lots of times left open, -path of least resistance issue....See Morekcarlis11
