Help - Mango freeze damage?
Comments (50)I have been a lurker for years but this will be my first post. I live Zephyrhills and in early Feb we had one night in particular that got 24deg for 6hrs and it was below freezing for over 12hrs. With that said, I had a 6'X6' lychee in full bloom, carrie mango in bloom, grumichama's, jamaica cherry and jaboticaba. I have many other temperate fruit tree's but these are my cold senitive trees. I sustained no damage at all. For the grumichamaa, j. cherry and jaboticaba i wrapped in C9 Xmas lights and covered with sheets; nothing else. The lychee and mango were more involved and expensive. I built a light weight wood frame around the plant made out of 1"x2" cheap-o wood. The plants are all wrapped with C9 Xmas lights. I also have (the # depending on tree size) 90w spot lights next to the tree trunk. The last step is affixing 1/4" styrofoam around the sides of the wooden frame. (Lowes sells the styrofoam in 4'x50' for $35). The tops are secured with either said styrofoam or sheets/plastic. Like I said, I have a 6'x6' Lychee and small mango that was blooming and had no damage whatsoever. Hope this helps....See MoreThe Very First Pickering and a Gift
Comments (17)I am back from my cruise and have the mango review. They ripened up to nothing less than fabulous! No fiber, sweet and juicy as could be. I lugged 7 of them along in my carry on luggage onto the ship and let the last few finish ripening in the cabin. One was too big to eat by myself so I gave the other half to the servers on the cruise ship....they were from India, Phillipines, Thialand and Indonesia. They were going nuts about the taste and size of these mangoes!!! I sprouted a few of the seeds and will graft them with budwood from the mother tree when they get big enough!...See MoreMango tree
Comments (7)Status Update: Okay, PI is the real thing! All the trees I got from them are doing well! The miracle mango had one remaining mango and it got pretty big...however, we never ate it! someone got into the yard, pick it and ate it I guess. It was all for nothing. Eveer since then, it never produce anymore flower stalks nor leaves. It has remained the same. Ironically, the other two are much bigger then it now. The small little Malika is beautiful with many branches and not a single scratch on any leaves. It is true what they say, in South florida that tree is disease resilient. I mean, even the bugs dont attack it. Weird huh? Oh, did I mention, it is also in full bloom. with one large stalk since Dec. the other branches now have buds which will become flower stalks soon. I already told you guys about the madamme Francis, since I got her, she just never stopped blooming so I will have to do something. She is a freak of nature. My pre-existing trees all bloomed..... It is weird because they did a first batch of stalks which have little mangos and now all teh branches with no stalks have buds which will turn into stalks. So double the mangos! LOL Go to Pine Island, it is the best!...See MoreThe perfect gift from Cathy........
