Bathroom vanity cabinet question - drawers or doors
Comments (3)We had all three of our vanities made by a local guy. Trials and tribulations aside (he had some personal issues at the time and disappeared for awhile, twice--in the middle of the builds!), we are glad we went that route. We modeled our vanities after the Sonia Europa (31.5" width and 24" width), with modifications that made the vanities work even better for us (taller overall, which made the drawers taller--win-win!). Drawers are full extension, with Blum soft close/self-close drawer glides. I find the storage space to be terrific in both the open space(s) behind the sliding doors, as well as in the drawers (in the guest bathroom I store bath and hand towels for that bathroom in the drawers)....See More2 cabinets of smaller drawers or 1cabinet of larger drawers?
Comments (39)The problem with the ref in the exact position you have it is that it can become a serious choke point. Using the 38" length marker supplied by Scherrs, and allowing for counter overhangs, the aisle is 38" without the ref-freezer doors and handles. Those will take away 3-7" depending on the depth of the handles(2"?) and panels (1.5") and the doors(3"?). Unless you're getting a very expensive ref, you'll end up you with a 31"-35" aisle. That makes two things tight. Carrying stuff like grocery bags or a platter through that opening - it takes about 42" for comfort. Maybe you never need to do that. People also need to stand in front of the ref when they use it and they sometimes have the doors open and stand in front of the doors cruising the contents. If that's a 36" ref, the doors will protrude around 18" when open, normal sized body depth is 16-18" and there is nothing left for others to pass. If you have a drawer freezer, same deal - but it can use a little bit more of the aisle. A door freezer uses a ton of aisle - like the entire space. Also the end stool user might get elbow in face - because everyone will turn around and set stuff on the peninsula. I'm not trying to say you can't trade off a bottleneck and a seating position, I'm trying to say I'm pretty sure that aisle will end up being a bottle neck. ================================== Scherrs might be able to make that entire end cabinet out of one piece instead of two seperate cabinets. You might ask what that costs because a 3" cabinet (without the door) may actually be 2" or less deep. You lose either about an inch (structural rail + cabinet back) in depth or perhaps as little as 1/2" if they can do a solid back that is structural instead of the loose back. Also ask about the depth required by the hinge itself for whatever hinges you've selected. If you're thinking 3" includes the door, then the cabinet will be either 1.75" deep or 1.5" deep. If it doesn't include the door, the cabinet could be 2.5" or 2" deep. If its built as one piece with the drawer cabinet (without the door), it increases to 3" deep....See More9" vs. 12" drawer base cabinet, sink base size and 4.5" space
Comments (18)Thanks for the headsup, angela12345. I measured the GD and went to HD to measure the interior dimension of a 30" sink base cabinet. My oh my, a 30" sink base is TINY! But, it will have to do for now. The 33" sink base has more space inside and I wish we could put it in our layout without my being so bothered. Sigh. Alas, I really can't stand how the spacing of the sink base is uneven in relation to the already lopsided window on the wall. It makes me feel I am living in the winchester mystery house! So far, I have ascertained that it can hold our trash, recycle bin and compost pail, with a smidge of room left for fire extinguisher. Definitely no room for insta-hot water heater and filter. So, we nix that from our wish list. I am looking for a single bowl undermount. After some online research, I found a kindred sink KCUS30A-10/10BG that I like but I don't know if it's available online or not. I wish I could use the ticor sink but the one I like needs a 33" sink base. Bummer. The kindred sink I am interested in will have interior dimension of 27"W x 16"L x 10"H. I think that will work beautifully for washing my long-handled pans. Here's the specs: http://www.kindred-sinkware.com/grfx/products/specs/KCUS30A_10-10BG.pdf. Hope Kindred is a good product....See MoreModify cabinet from door & drawer to single door with mixer lift?
Comments (11)I LOVE my Kitchenaid. I used it all the time in my last house, which I had a mixer lift in. I'm in temporary housing on OH how I miss it! I still don't know if we will build new or buy this place and renovate- but either way the mixer lift is a must-have! I'm also tickled to find out that I can replace some of the cabinets with drawers- if I can do this, there's no reason at all to replace the whole kitchen, which will save us $10,000+...See MoreMK D
