We can't find a quality sofa anywhere--help!
Comments (27)Hi Manbike and other experts, I just bought an Elite full top-grain, aniline plus leather sofa that is made in their California plant. They use tempered steel sinuous springs for both the back and seating suspension. From their site... Depending on the design of an individual style, our frames are made of responsibly forested Pacific Northwest alder hardwood or of Forest Stewardship Council (FCS) certified hardwood plywood. The hardwood plywood frames we produce also meet the strict standards of the California Air Resources Board (CARB). We create the frames in our own mill and reinforce our fames to ensure proper tailoring of the selected covering. And, while others may not use corner blocks at all, we use many in each sofa to enhance its strength. I do not have it yet. Most of the better sofas like HM are out of my price range. I sort of got warn down on my research and took the plunge. I did read a few bad reviews but apparently they have a cheaper side line sold at Macys and a few other stores that is made in China. I'm a bit nervous as I did not try it out in person. Also, if plywood is bad what do they mean by hardwood plywood? Does that mean crap? The choices are so limited around me so I ordered from a dealer I have used in the past. Do you know anything about Elite quality? I have read that not all sinuous springs are bad and that some can be very good. I should add that I did write the factory and ask if my sofas had any China on it, they wrote back and said no, it is made in the California plant. Now granted in the world of furniture I am not making a huge investment. It is however a big investment to me in my world. I bought a four seat Aero sofa and a three seat Aero sofa, both in the top grain leather for a total of $4800. IâÂÂm just hoping that IâÂÂm getting a good mid to mid high quality and not over paying for a poor quality. Trying to get the best bang for your buck in a mid to mid high range is incredibly hard. Not everyone can spring for a HM. With H&M you know what you are getting. Not so much with other brands these days, even brands that formally had a good reputation. Comments (11)You are into the most crowded segment of the upholstered furniture industry. There are hundreds of companies that make upholstered furniture that retails at the price range you are looking at. Don't expect to find 8 way hand tied coils at your budget. But you should be able to get a sofa and love seat with kiln-dried hardwood frames, high-density foam cushions and sinuous coils for $1500. There are so many companies out there that can fit your requirements that I don't know where to start recommending. I will warn you, however, of a few things to avoid. Stay away from Ashley Furniture, probably the largest single manufacturer and retailer of upholstered furniture, unless you really want one of their $399 sofas. Their more expensive offerings are still junk underneath. The other warning I have is to stay away from leather at that price range. Leather offerings at that price come in 2 different categories: first are the sofas that are made with "bycast" leather that is basically little pieces of scrap leather that has been chopped up and glued back together. The mill cost is for bycast is about the same as a medium-low grade of fabric. The second category of leather to stay away from is genuine leather sofas. For a manufacturer to afford to put real leather on a sofa at that price means that they have to cheat on the insides. You will be getting a $399 quality sofa with a nice piece of leather on the outside. I am not terribly impressed with IKEA's upholstered furniture offerings. I think their case goods are a much better value. Microfibers can be great. Just remember that there are different grades. See if your salesperson will let you feel a swatch of the fabric. Some microfibers are very thin while others have some weight to them. It can be very difficult to tell the difference when the fabric is made up on a sofa, until you have had it in your home for a year or two and start noticing the thinner fabric wearing out....See MoreHow can I modernize my knotty pine-paneled kitchen?
Comments (12)Thanks, mjsee! Unfortunately the nearest Ikea is over a hundred miles away from us so I'm not exactly sure we'll go that route cabinet-wise. As for the walls, I tend to agree even if my first reaction when I saw this room was "Oh, eff my life, we need to paint this ASAP." It's grown on me and I definitely don't like the idea that once I paint it we can't really go back. I could see one day taking it down and drywalling it (the insulation is non-existent as we're in a warm part of California so I'd put some in at that point), but we're not there yet. Nicole--I love that look, I just don't think it'll work in my space. :\ Stacey--thanks! WRT the living space, it's set up fairly similarly to the scene shown: two green microfiber couches instead of a sectional, a black/glass coffee table, and from Overstock. We have a black/dark brown TV table, a desk hidden behind the TV, and generally dark-colored wood or pine bookshelves dotted around the room. Oh, and a massive cat tree. :) I took the shelves down from the windows. The fans we brought in are amazing--dark wood blades with these Steampunk-like brushed nickel bodies. Comments (65)I'm a millennial and I blame those cheap orchids you can find about everywhere haha. Most young people today do not have the stability of their own home and backyard to plant roses, many jump from job to job that is just the reality of today. With orchids they can bring them anywhere with them as long as they've got a single rented bedroom with a windowsill. Marketing ploys like "Just add Ice" Orchids really add to their attraction also. Most millennial gardeners I know are really into orchids and they view roses as old school, finicky, and unsightly when not in bloom. Some people I've tried to give cuttings to told me that the thing about roses is that they look awful most of the year and their thorns are ugly. Personally I think orchids are much more difficult getting them to rebloom and such, I kill them all the time somehow. I admit, rose bushes do look unsightly sometimes, but there's nothing like seeing them change with the seasons. The recent drought restrictions in CA also factors in. I've seen many yards just in my neighborhood here remove their roses for rocks and cactus because it seems like all you hear is people shaming others for "wasting" water. Neighbors are encouraged to report each other if they see people not abiding by the restrictions. It sucks when you have a tiny yard to begin with and are being told to water on certain days and during certain hours only because I can't always be home during those times. Landscapers are always knocking on my door offering their "drought tolerant" landscaping services now and meaning people are using their services. I find roses are pretty drought tolerant once they get established so I'm not going to worry about it. Here's the water restrictions for my city. Watering - Exterior Irrigation No watering - between 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. or within 48 hours of measurable rainfall Even numbered addresses - Tuesday and Fridays only Odd numbered addresses - Mondays and Thursdays only Locations without addresses - Monday and Thursdays only Water leaks - must be corrected within 24 hours of discovery/notifications Wasteful running of water/washing with water - unlawful, without reasonable purpose...See Moreaprilneverends
