Time for a change ....need help with sofa/ upholstery choices
Comments (15)I am frustrated that I can't get an accurate color for the pictures of the fabric samples I have. Every picture I take washes out the colors. Outsideplaying, I have samples in both green and the gold/ brown you have suggested. They seem to work well with my rug. I also have a bold stripe that might work for an accent piece. If I go with a fabric as opposed to leather what combination of sofa, love seat or chairs would you use and what combination of colors and patterns would make for an interesting room.Should I stick with the roll arm sofa style in my previous post or would a different style work better. Here is one of my stripe fabric sample .....again the color is not accurate but I'm wondering if the scale of pattern will work in the room. The colors in the fabric sample match perfectly with with my rug. Both the rug and the sample have chocolate browns, bronzes and rust colors in addition to the gray green and black. I may switch to a different camera to see if that makes a difference....See MoreHow has the color of your soapstone changed over time?
Comments (11)california-dreamer, I've been following your saga with interest and worry. I don't know the answer to your question but if it were me, I'd call one of the big soapstone places and ask the question. Green Mountain, M Tex, Vermont Soapstone, that Tom guy in California who everyone raves about...I got mine from M Tex in NJ and I know they are well aware that they are discussed on this forum; I am sure that if you say, I was referred to you by someone on the Kitchen Forum and I have a question about soapstone veining changing color over time, that they will be happy to tell you what they know. I believe one of the owners of M Tex in NJ is Roberto and he is very knowledgeable. The person who sometimes answers the phone is a bit of a ditz; you need to get past her. Maybe floridajoshua will weigh in on the question. I have to say, though, that if you are buying this stone on the hope that it will change, then it is probably not the right stone for you. I think you need to love it going in. Good luck!...See MoreWhen things take (lots of) time & your taste changes
Comments (24)Well, if your house style isn't leading you in a particular way (or, restricting you to a certain style) I'd say you're on the right path by just pursuing the things that please you. Personally I always enjoy visiting homes with eclectic style, because they're usually owned by interesting people. I think there are far worse things than mixing items from different periods and styles, especially if they're meaningful to you (like your mother's antiques.) So what do I do when you come to the actual substantial pieces I'd saved for and purchased that I just plain no longer like!? I'm going to disperse of some of these items via Craig's List, as you have. And I'm working up my courage for a giant garage sale. (How is your queen bed "too big to sell?") My rationale is, I enjoyed the anticipation and the purchase, and owning them for a while. So, I got that value out of them. Now, some don't work. So, shall we beat ourselves up about changing our minds about what we like? No, we shall not, because changing means we're growing, and growing is a good thing. Growing means we're aware, alive, having fun, and becoming something new. And besides that, it's totally unfair to your queen bed to make it live in a house where it's not truly loved for its angular maple goodness. Set it free, and let it find happiness. And besides that, when you sell your queen bed, and give somebody a heck of a deal, you are singlehandedly stimulating the economy and encouraging commerce. And goodness knows we need that. Why, it's almost your civic duty. (Being able to rationalize anything is a very handy skill, have you noticed?)...See MoreIs now the time to fertilize? Change acidity for color change?
Comments (2)You can feed them once in Spring and then add "weak" fertilizers like coffee grounds, liquid seaweed and-or liquid fish during the rest of the growing season. If you had been located in the far South, your shrubs would go dormant between Dec-Jan, and you could add another shot of fertilizers in Sept. Add ferts after your avge date of last frost. Chemical fertilizers should be general purpose, slow-release fertilizers with a NPK Ratio around 10-10-10; apply them per label directions. Or use about 1./2 to 1 cup of organic compost, composted manure or cottonseed meal (for a newly purchased shrub). Those three are organic and slow-release that will last thru most of the growing season. Normally, you want them plants to go dormant before early frosts so you should stop all fertilizers by the end of June-ish. Amendments to control acidity (garden lime will turn colored blooms in acidic soils a shade of pink) should be added according to the label directions and should be continued thru the year on the specified frequency because otherwise, the soil will tend to loose whatever alkalinity you have added with the amendments. You normally would want to start several months before the shrubs bloom so feel free to start with the amendments now (if the soil is not frozen)....See Morerob333 (zone 7b)
