More questions about Monstera Deliciosa

Amanda Plante

Hi,

My monstera is probably somewhere around 60 years old. I inherited it almost 15 years ago and, while I don't always have the greenest thumb, I've managed to keep it alive all this time!

I have cut it back a couple of times over the years and propagated the clippings, but I've mostly ignored the poor thing for a couple of years now and it's become too top heavy with new growth at the ends of the vines. Also, some of the vines are 12 feet long and have no leaves toward the planted end.

My question is: if I cut the vines for new propagation, will leaves start growing out of the leafless part? Or, how can I get some leaves to grow there? It seems logical to me that if I lop off the new stuff, the old stuff will get the energy previously devoted to that, but I'm pretty sure that it will just start vining out of the end and I'll still be left with 3 feet of sad looking, scrawny stems poking up out of the plant pot.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Amanda
