Speed Queen Top Loader: Will it Fit in My Laundry Closet?

Hi, I am considering a SQ TL and was told all of the SQ TLs are 28" deep. My laundry closet's depth is 31" (32" with the doors; taking out the doors is not an option). Will a 28"D SQ TL fit in my laundry closet? The SQ rep says with hoses and all, maximum depth will be 29". Is that correct? Water hook ups are behind the washer. There's a rim at the top of the SQ TL that adds another inch or so; would that be an issue? Currently, I have a 27"D HE washer which has to be returned because it is rubbing against my closet door. Prior to that, I had an old 26" non HE washer that fit in my closet and was the best washer ever (not a SQ but it was close to being one). Will the SQ TL fit in my closet? Thank you.

I just measured my SQ TL. The depth of the washer w/ the rim is 28". The body of the washer beneath the rim is 26". The hoses attach below the rim...on the part of the washer that measures 26" in depth.

My plumbing situation is kinda' primitive w/ exposed pipes and valves (no fancy hook-up box.) Right now, including all the pipes, my washer is using 31.5" of space...that includes room for the drain hose run behind the washer and dump into the laundry sink. There is room to wiggle it back at least another inch....i.e. 30.5". Remember that 30.5 inches includes my pipes and valves.

IOW's, I think it will fit w/ a bit of room to spare.

That seems tight to me. 1 inch extra for the hoses seems too short. If a 27 inch depth is not working for you, a 28 inch depth is definitely not going to work. I am wondering if you have in your budget enough to have a person come in to help give you an idea whether or not you could do something to expand the space. That being said, it may not be worth it to spend that kind of money and labor time to accommodate the SQ.

I can't expand the space but thank you for the suggestion. I was told the SQ has built in hoses to save space, unlike the new HE models, and the panel in the back is flatter. Is this true?

Have you gone online to check the manuals recommendations for installation on a main floor? I have my Miele situated on our main floor without issue. Some details include: wood joist, total of 1.5" wood subfloor, 3/16" ply underlayment, 1/4" self leveling compound, Strata-Mat decoupling layer (for the tile), then finally, tile. So that is one feature. The other is that I have the set in a corner backed up against a load bearing wall. My floor joist are only 8' long in the room. I have the machine as level as I could make it. My machine does not vibrate, except for a few seconds as it picks up speed, and then its not the floor, but the dryer on top. When I first installed the washer, the tech support told me to run a wet towel through the spin cycle and check how that worked. He said that was the most unbalanced load one could have. I tried it, and my machine was terrific. I bet a SQ would be too :)

I've seen others reviews by this site, they are universally poor. We've never had stains remain on clothes with our SQ TL. We have never had clothes get tangled in the agitator. When it says 27 minutes to wash, it is 27 minutes. Are they complaining that a heavy duty wash or one with extra spin cycles (or whatever) takes longer? Yes, it is not a time machine, sorry. Spin speed is 710 I think (from memory) - the one downside to our old F&P TL (which was a great machine also) which was 1000 or 1100. That is a negative, but the other complaints from this useless review are without merit as best I can tell. Many of us don't like FL, or HE TL, I would not have either type of machine, it's an agitator TL or nuthin'.......

We have about a dozen of the ones with a mechanical dial. They have been going, some as long as 10-12 years with no problems and they are used heavily in a commercial environment. I think either would be good, but read the manuals online and look carefully at the features. One thing I like about the mechanical one is that I can change things around mid cycle. I am not sure how that works on the electronic one.

Thank you ci_lantro for measuring. I am guessing by hook up box, you mean the hot/water lines built in the wall? If so, I have that and the SQ would probably fit.

Yes, that plastic rough in box w/ the valves and drain integrated that is recessed into the wall.

How far above the finished floor is the bottom of this box?

Under normal situations, with the laundry box built into the wall, the nearest that I can determine is that you need 30.5" of space. 28'' for the washer plus space for the drain hose with only about 1/2" of 'wiggle room'. (Assuming the drain hose is the same diameter on the new washers as my 7 yr. old SQ which appears to be approx. 1.5" diameter.)

If the SQ won't work, you can go to AJ Madison's web site and do a search for a washer that will fit. Adjust the search filter using the washer depth function.

ci_lantro, the recessed box is 34.5"H from the floor. I'll check the hose again to see how wide it is.

Is there anything comparable to SQ for durability and the features I want? My guess is no.
