Speed Queen top loader- buttons or dial?

We were looking at Speed Queen washers yesterday (yes, I've read the pros and cons), and the salesman was pushing (pun intended) the model with buttons and a touch pad over the mechanical dial. He said the mechanical dial can 'strip out' over time, where the touch pad is more durable. Over the years, my experiences have been just the opposite, with more 'electronic' models tending to give out, and more expensive to fix. The price difference is only $20- not enough to matter. I tend to be 'old school', and am hoping this machine will out-last me! Any thoughts/experience?

SQ had known issues with their mechanical washer timers at one point, and the dryer timers also can be flaky. All SQ commercial frontloaders have electronics and are considered highly reliable on that point. Presumably the robust electronics carried into the domestic machines.

I've had the 542 and matching gas dryer for 8 months now and they have performed flawlessly. I considered the 432 but chose the 542 because of the extra cycles. I liked the idea of having them available should I ever need them. And I have. The cost was only 40 or 50$ more and I have no regrets. We are a family of three adults, two dogs (beagle and great dane) several cats and do about 6 to 8 loads a week.My daughter can be quite picky about her clothes, as I am.

I remember Miele told me years & years ago...DO NOT open the dryer door during operation. As Dadoes said it puts stress on the heating element, and sometimes it can create a "snafu" in the moisture processor, and the dryer thinks it should start "all over again". I know this sounds crazy, and I do not know if I believe it...but I never open the door during operation. Some people like to see their laundry being dried, so I've noticed many new dryers are using clear doors, like on washers! Miele used clear doors on the T98xx dryers, but has gone back to solid doors for residential units. Little Giant and OctoPlus have clear doors!

I've seen others reviews by this site, they are universally poor. We've never had stains remain on clothes with our SQ TL. We have never had clothes get tangled in the agitator. When it says 27 minutes to wash, it is 27 minutes. Are they complaining that a heavy duty wash or one with extra spin cycles (or whatever) takes longer? Yes, it is not a time machine, sorry. Spin speed is 710 I think (from memory) - the one downside to our old F&P TL (which was a great machine also) which was 1000 or 1100. That is a negative, but the other complaints from this useless review are without merit as best I can tell. Many of us don't like FL, or HE TL, I would not have either type of machine, it's an agitator TL or nuthin'.......

Back in 1987 I had my first SFH and my washer was a Kenmore 70 Series. I was able to wash a queen size bedspread by using the reset on the water level control and filling it with enough water to saturate it and the results were satisfactory. I had to be involved-making certain it was well washed and well rinsed, but I only washed the spread occasionally, so it was not a chore. Having had two FLs machines I am tired of the balancing issues and 70 minutes plus to do a big load because it takes it 10 minutes or more to finally spin (on medium). I read some articles recently about how to handle washing a king size comforter when the owner's washer won't accommodate it-and the recommendation was to wash it in the bathtub. I think that may be a good solution for me. I will be happy with the SQ capacity for my normal laundry. One of the reasons I am buying the analog is just for the reason of being able to use reset on the water level control and add as much water as I want for a specific load. I will try to do a big comforter-and if it does not work out I will come up with an alternative. I guess I should feel ashamed for saying I don't wash the comforter very often-but we use it for decor and not as actual bedding.

We have about a dozen of the ones with a mechanical dial. They have been going, some as long as 10-12 years with no problems and they are used heavily in a commercial environment. I think either would be good, but read the manuals online and look carefully at the features. One thing I like about the mechanical one is that I can change things around mid cycle. I am not sure how that works on the electronic one.

I vaguely recall that when the touch control pad first came out, SQ was offering a longer warranty on it than on the mechanical dial. I had ordered mechanical, and they shipped me a touch pad, and I believe that is when my dealer told me (by way of consolation) that the touch pad had a better warranty. I might be wrong, and it’s been a while, but I’d ask. Also yes, do try the Laundry Forum for more info.
