New Garage with a brick house

We are wanting to demolish our old garage (its barely a one stall) and replace it with a two stall garage/entryway/laundry room, so it will be a good size addition. What are everyone's thoughts on doing this addition in siding as opposed to brick? Our house is extremely old and I have no idea if you can brick that will match. Any have any thoughts? Our brick is orange-ish. Not my favorite color so I thought a really nice dark brown might actually tone it down a little bit. Also, our house has a few steps to get in to. I thought this might be a good opportunity to add a ramp in the garage to get into the house (we aren't getting any younger and I thought it might be nice for resale value). Any thoughts on this?

Hummm...if you go with a dark brown wont that just make it and the brick on the house stand out even more?

Don't they have fake brick look alike siding they can match up and make it not look like an addition?

My parent's garage had two people doors to it. One on the back, next to the vehicle door, and one that opened up to the front porch very close to the front door. My mother didn't want it to be the same as the front door, but she didn't want to have this pretty front door and your average white door in the same "shot". And the white doors really seem to pop out with her brick. So, she made them the same finish, but the front door has glass details and the garage door doesn't. The other garage door is just white and matches the vehicle garage door. Unfortunately, I went through all my photos and looks like I don't have any that show the front and garage doors at the same time or really even after the brick was done. I'll post the best one I have. From most angles, you don't really see the garage door, only the front door. As you can see, our home is long overdue for an exterior refresh. We plan to tear out the outdated, overgrown boxwoods and replace with fresh landscaping, but that’s another thread… My questions are threefold: What is a good exterior paint color? I do not like the present gray. I was thinking BM Putnam Ivory (sample board on right side of garage) with White Dove for the trim (i.e., porch columns for sure), but am open to suggestions. I will paint the gutters a match as close to the brick as possible (BM Coyote Trail?) so they will hopefully fade away. On the ‘triangle peaks’ on the right side of the house’s roofline, am I supposed to paint the “trim” a different color, or paint it all the body color as it is presently? I’m not sure how to separate which color I paint where (fascia, soffit, body, trim, etc.). What about window trim -- body color or trim color? Please recommend a garage door style. It is hard for me to visualize different styles since there is a two-car and a one-car door and they are at the front of the house – it is such a massive expanse. Should I leave the front door stained wood with a wood-color garage, or paint one or both? Thank you for your help! "triangle peaks"

I go with the sunroom, too, and here's why. You can build a shed for cheap at some point, and until then you'll probably keep one car inthe driveway, and all the bikes and basketballs in the garage along with the yard and snow tools. The sunroom will make a great playroom while the little ones are little. I've seen that sunroom with nothing in it but a low-pile play rug and Lego. Or balls. Or plastic hockey sticks. Or those big Little Tykes (slide, trikes, trains) Or Hot Wheels. Or dollhouses. Or art projects (easy-to-clean tile floor). Usually just one or two of those. But a great playspace, near you but not, outdoors but not. After they are done with those types of toys, it can be dining space and added living space. You don't need the shed until Boy #1 gets a car. Oops, didn't mean to scare ya lol! Upstairs, I wonder if you can steal some space from the game room to make a reach-in closet for Bedroom 2, and use its walk-in closet to expand the bathroom. 5 boys will need more counterspace, more drawer storage, and (I can't believe I'm saying this, I'm usually a 1-sink gal) 2 sinks. Downstairs, consider eliminating the study closet and adding a shower to the powder room.

You said, " The sides are painted wood siding. ". That's why I asked if the addition would be sided like them. I think if you already have siding on your house, even though it's not on the front, then you'd do best to make sure all the siding on the house is the same. So that either means painted siding on the addition, or new siding on all the sided parts + the addition.

I have to ask, where do you live?

Builders have sources for brick. They can find it or help you find it. You might focus on finding the same size brick and painting it all when you are finished.

Ramps don't add value to a house. All they say is "wheelchair in use," or "old people live here." The next owner will have it removed if possible. If you build a concrete ramp it might reduce the value. If you need a ramp, build one that can be easily removed before you need to sell.

My next question...if there's brick on my existing garage that we are going to tear down, do you know if they can salvage that? Then we could incorporate that and maybe it would blend better?

I think I'm over the ramp idea already...and your comments helped make that final decision! HAHA!

Haley from what I'm reading online it's very labor intensive and NOT cost effective even if you can find someone that will agree to do it.

Since you don't like the color of the brick you have I would just have the whole house painted. Makes it look like a whole new house after.

Since this space will include a laundry room have you thought out how you want the room to function? What type of machines, folding space drying space etc...?

So, you have brick that matches your house on your garage now? There could be a chance some of that is salvageable and could be incorporated into a partly new wood garage exterior to tie to the house....

How close to the house? Former neighbors added a mother in law suite over their detached down slope garage a few years ago and connected it to the house with a lovely enclosed breezeway. I wonder if there would be a way to design a slope, or easier or fewer steps through that kind of application (you'll be carrying laundry?)....but as above, hard to advise without a photo or your plan....

I don't really have plan! I am in the very beginning stages :) The thing that is holding me up from the entire project is the exterior of the home not matching. If I can't get the outside to look like I want it, then its not worth doing, yano what I mean?
