Any balling on newer Kordes, Florentina in particular?

This weekend I'll be shovel pruning two Cinderella Fairy Tale roses by my front fence. I've had them for several years and there has always been some degree of balling, but this year it's really bad. (I'm on muggy Long Island, NY.)

They were covered in tons of pink buds and I was so hoping that the buds might open nicely, but no such luck. The rest of my roses (over 100) have been especially floriferous this year, so I guess Cindy is just not happy in my climate.

I want to replace the Cinderellas with Florentinas, but I'm concerned about the same thing happening. So, my question--have you had balling on Florentina or any of the other newer Kordes?

I also eliminated Cinderella and Jasmina and a few others for severe balling in my climate. We have nightly dew for nearly the entire summer. I have Florentina but it's is to young to comment except to say it has opened well so far. I do have other new ones that I fear will not be staying long. The petals on these are very soft and appear to be ever balling contestants. A couple are Kordes some are not and I should have known better from past purchases not to get these. Madame Anisette, Honeymoon, Summer Romance (to soon to tell for sure) and Cloud Ten.

I just went out to check on Florentina and she looks good no sign of balling and I don't believe that she will. Her petals had pretty good substance last year in her first year here.

My Cinderella a few years ago before she was asked to leave.

Sad, but this is why she went.

We have had a series of downpours in the PNW and both my Florentines did not ball

Because they have many petals, that did make them bow down if not tied.

I think the advantage that David Austin has compared to other specialist rose nurseries is that they able to market their roses better and their brand is very well known and stands out. I do love the green logo and the fact they refer to their roses as "English roses" which conjures up images of drinking tea outside the garden. A lot of the Kordes roses don't appear to me much because they lack the defined shape and form of English roses. What I mean by that is when you look at the shape of David Austin roses, they look fascinating! Their appearances look like a piece of art : delicate petals and the complex arrangement of petals inside a shallow cupped blooms. Yes, most of them are not as healthy or bloom as much as other roses but I don't mind. It gives me work to do in the morning - keeps me healthy and fit. If a rose bloom too much it can ended up being boring so a shattered blooms here and there makes me look forward to see it bloom. Having said all that I do noticed a lot of their latest releases are very similar to their older varieties. Unless they change the look people will end up trying out newer roses from other companies. Take for instance Boscobel looks a bit like PAOK... but I love the name Boscobel and usually refer it to a "he" and I needed a "male" rose in the garden. If this rose was named something else like "The Endevour" I don't think I would have fallen in love with it.

I don't think that can be true as I do not know of any 2-year budded material that was harvested and sold this year and I have pretty good control on what is sold in the market. Next spring there will be both one-year own roots and 2-year budded on Dr. Huey in the market so it will be harder for me to say exactly what is being offered on some of the websites.

Ben, I got Lone Star from Chamblees when Mark had his sale area. $5 it was! It is planted in my garden cottage area and is in a prime spot. I have been very pleased with it - its grown well, shrubby and covers itself in pale yellow blooms. It blackspots about like everything else but its very healthy and I like it alot. I sure miss Chamblees sale area! Mark would put stuff from other hybridizers there that were treasures. I still have an unknown apricot climber from some unknown hybridizer with no name that I love.

I only grow Lady in Red Does the color fade? What sort of 'red' do you get? As Robert Burns would say, ‘A red red rose’. As pure and bold a true red as can be. I love it, but it blends with nothing else. How's disease resistance where you are? Seems very disease resistant, but I do spray. Height and winter hardiness? 6 ft in 1st year, I‘d guess 9 ft at maturity. Uses - are these freestanding, fanned on a trellis, or obelisk/pillar roses? Obelisk, an ideal climber , easily trained, flowers to the ground , exceptional repeat. Scent? Flower shape/petal count Very slight fragrance, fluffy blooms, 40-50 petals. Thorns? Large though well spaced. Are your plants own root or grafted? Grafted, Dr Huey. I must say this rose has the most ideal growth and flower power by far of any climber I’ve ever grown. By that I mean not only is it vigorous , it always wants to bloom. It flowers from bottom to top. As one flush is still in full bloom, the next set of laterals is already well on its way to forming buds. Unlike many other climbers, everything it puts out ends in bloom, and it blooms all the time!

Whew ! I feel like I dodged a bullet .. I really wanted Cinderella but glad I didn't order. Of course everyone's garden is different and you have to take chances sometimes ! My jasmina has never balled even a little . Nor cloud ten . But my clotilde soupert iooked like old rosarians sad pic .

My Florentina hasn't balled. Planted last year and on its second flush this year.

Thank you all for your replies. Glad to hear that no one has had problems with Florentina.

Patty, I have the Madame, too. She hasn't bloomed yet, but I have the same reservations you do. I was hesitant to buy her, but fragrance coupled with disease resistance are so tempting.

Oldrosarian, my Cinderellas look like your bottom picture. Not looking forward to getting rid of all those thorny canes, but she has overstayed her welcome. I plan on draping Florentina over a post-and-rail fence, so I hope that will help with the bowing.

Another baller--Sweet Victoria from Palatine. I just cut all the rotting flowers off. The blooms were very brown near the edges, so I'm thinking it might be thrips. I'll give her a little more time, but I have to learn to resist those globular shaped blooms. They just don't do well here.
