Comments (17)Carol, Thanks. It was a very pretty wedding, but a very small one. They decided about 10 days ago to get married before she left for her National Guard basic training. I think she leaves next Monday. So, I think it was on Tuesday that they got the license, and then on Wednesday they made arrangements to get married at a small wedding chapel here in Marietta. That gave us Thursday through Monday a.m. to get ready for the wedding, which was scheduled for Monday afternoon. So, considering that time was short, we did really, really, really well. Best of all, since it was small and simple, it was pretty relaxed and joyful---no one was all stressed out over this or that. And, we are simply delighted by the two new additions to our family and love them dearly and already considered them family members long before the wedding. I ordered some seed from Johnny's for the fall garden, and some from Willhite, and picked up a couple of packets of Target's Burpee seed line which I was surprised to see still on display in the Denton store last week. (I can't walk past a seed rack without stopping to look which explains why I am growing 5 varieties of fall broccoli instead of 1.) It is hard to find seed here too any time other than spring, so I try to stock up then, but sometimes I forget to pick up stuff for fall. Or, even worse, I come home with seed in the spring but don't immediately put it into the seed storage box and then....when I need it in the fall, I can't find it. Of course, it always shows up in a drawer or something in the dead of winter. I use coffee cups to soak seeds, but always make sure to leave one cup for Tim so he can drink his coffee. It is so hot here that it seems insane to be planting a fall garden doesn't it, but eventually the weather does cool down. At least, I'm hoping it cools down soon. I am SO over the summer weather and ready for fall's more moderate temperatures. Our purple martins haven't been around their houses the last couple of days, so all the babies have grown up and flown the coop, so to speak. To me, that's one of the signs that summer is starting to wind down. Dawn...See MoreWhite kitchen in Southern Spain
Comments (69)Oh, does time fly ... My white Ikea kitchen was installed 5 years ago and I thought a follow-up would be usefull. I regularly see questions like: ¨Do Ikea cabinets hold up well over time?¨ and ¨Do you regret choosing white cabinets?¨. Well, the answers are quite simple: the cabinets look like the day they were installed and the drawer hardware is running as smooth as ever, even when filled to capacity. I have no pantry, so everything is in drawers, and you can stow amazing quantities of dry goods and cans. As for the colour (a white comparable to BM ´Simply White´), yes, you see everything on them, but in a positive way. Meaning that you clean them up sort of straight away and therefore ending up with a clean kitchen. I am still thrilled to bits with my hard working Ikea kitchen. Comments (124)Hey mountaineergirl! Glad to know I'm not the only one from "Almost Heaven West Virginia!" I'm from the big city of Charleston -- fourth generation (at least); went off to college in central Kentucky, seminary on Boston's North Shore, honeymooned across America with everything I owned in a UHaul truck to settle in Los Angeles for 4 years, then came back east, inside the Capital Beltway in Maryland for 6 years, then finally home again, home again to Charlie West. Like Dorothy said, "There's no place like home!"...See MoreTalk to me about Tauck Tours and Spain, please
Comments (25)Yes, they will take your luggage, but my point is you do have to manage it in your room. And to and from the airport. (When we went to Hawaii, we were flown on a private jet from island to island and the tour guide said people got so used to not managing their luggage, that they'd forget to pick it up at the airport when they got home!) One big heavy bag that we'd have to share is always awkward for us. We prefer to have a small carry on and one larger bag each...you'll want the carry on for the bus as, after breakfast, when you go back to your room, your luggage will be gone and you'll have to have a way of carrying whatever...you need after breakfast such as toothpaste, mouthwash, sunscreen, etc. as well as sweaters, cameras, sunglasses.... I used to use a large purse and DH a small travel bag, but for Panama, tauck gave us zippered knapsacks and we've found them even more convenient. YMMV. Also some mornings you will be needing to be packed up early so they can load the luggage on the bus, so the less you have to manage in terms of clothes and such, the better off you'll be. That dress looks perfect...can be casual or dressed up! We also each got a waistband wallet (Rick Steve's recommends them) for inside the pants to carry passports and money and credit cards. At the heavily touristed areas, you may find pick pockets are active. A friend of mine had a fanny pack on on one of his trips, and as he stepped off the bus, someone grabbed the strap, cut it with a knife and ran off with all his money and cards. Also a good idea to make sure your wallet or cards are RFID protected....See MoreEl Jardín de la Alegría en Madrid
