Born and raised in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. Live in the country near Madison, Wisconsin and in the summer spend as much time as possible on our boat in Port Washington, Wisconsin. Hate Wisconsin winters - try to get away as much as possible.

Born, raised and lived in Montana--Bitteroot Valley girl, then Great Falls. We just moved 6 years ago to the Sonoran Desert outside Tucson, AZ. I don't miss the Montana winters!

Stuck seed coats - aka helmet heads - require a very special method of removal. :) Spit, saliva. The enzymes in it quickly soften the shell so it can fall off or be easily remoned. Works better than anything else. Just dab a drop of saliva on it wait an hour or so and it should slip off easily. Repeat application as needed. 1/4" long roots for just germinated seedlings is normal but should double in length within 24-48 hours assuming proper media and growing conditions. Dave

You have to keep reminding yourself that this won't be a quick project. Since you're starting from scratch on a difficult area, I'd guess this will take several years of trial and error to get a look you're happy with. The stepping areas and feeders/birdbath are great ideas. There isn't much point in adding a lot of mulch to an area that you're not ready to plant yet - certainly add an inch or two, if you think it'll stay there. It will break down and the soil will be better when you get to planting the area, but until you get some rooted plants into that area the new soil and the mulch will erode a bit. I wouldn't pull up the weeds - their roots will help stabilize the area until you're ready to tackle it. You can dump some mulch on them and it'll help kill off the bits growing above ground without removing the roots. If you spray with Round Up (might not be allowed anymore in Halifax area?) that will kill off the weeds without removing the roots, but... Round Up takes a few days to a few weeks to break down, and you've got a slope where the rain will run down and wash that stuff onto your lawn or other plants. Might not be a wise idea :-) I would just dump mulch onto them a couple of times a year and gently pull out what is really loose. It takes longer, but you are solving the poor soil problem that way too. In general I am not a fan of herbicides and pesticides since almost all problems they are used for can be sloved with better cultural practices or gardening techniques. I don't know if this would work for you, but if you want to add a lot of mulch right now, and have it stay put, you could place chicken wire or hardware cloth over the mulch (pin the chicken wire to the ground with stakes). A heavy rain might erode some of it, especially in the steeper parts, but it would help a bit at least. About your seeds you plan to use next spring - a word of caution. Seeds are a great way to fill up the slope quickly and without breaking the bank, but stay away from the generic 'wildflower' mixes you can get in Canadian Tire and places like that. They contain a lot of weedy seeds and very few seeds of plants you actually want to have growing there. Buy a good quality wildflower mix - it won't be that much more expensive and it'll be a major improvement over the cheaper stuff. Seeds can wash away fairly easily, so you might want to consider laying down some thin jute or burlap to sow them in or under (that protective burlap you get to wrap shrubs in the winter would work). Sow then as soon as the snow melts. Or you could wintersow them (or some of them) in containers and plant the resulting seedlings in your nooks and crannies. The Japanese Maple being shallow rooted might be a problem if you were planting it directly on the slope. Shallow rooted plants will have a harder time staying put on a slope, but if you build it a nice sized terrace, then it might be perfect. Select one that is hardier than would normally be necessary for your area because of the cold flowing downhill problem. You have a swampy lawn huh? That's a drainage problem. You have neighbours higher up the hill than you do? That's almost certainly where your water is coming from. Peat moss might mop up a bit of water, but I doubt it'd solve your problem. A permanent fix would be to regrade your lawn, but that's not cheap (or have your neighbour regrade his, but that's a lot to ask from a neighbour). You could also install a French drain type of thing to drain the water to a lower lying area or drain - that's cheaper, and a do-it-yourself project if you want, but still a lot of work. You could decide to grow a bog garden in that spot - irises, cannas, lots of neat grasses... I think your slope provides you with some really neat garden terrain - my 'fantasy garden' always has a nice terraced slope full of plants, but it is going to be more challenging than building 'ye olde generic bed'. Thank you for letting us know youÂre around, and for telling us about yourself, GM. And thanks for your comment about mixing sand with clay! That subject seems to come up a lot around here! This area was once considered a Chaparral, but then the cement trucks rolled in and road crews did their work and now it's just hot and the grasses are gone. I live about a mile from the Rio Grande and have clay and silt alkaline soil. The water is so hard you can almost see the salts. I read a blurb somewhere saying that the only way to counter\-act all the clay in this soil would be to bring in some sand. Now that person doesn't know that clay and sand are a great mix for adobe bricks. I hope he was being facetious. About me: I am at about 5800 feet and am basically a newbie at gardening. I've grown a tomato plant or two, but last year was my first REAL attempt at veggies and flowers. I have three small beds of native plants for flowers and space allocated to green chili, peppers, tomatoes, zucchini, butternut, basil, watermelon, cucumbers, lots of beans (trying bush and pole). Besides spending time fighting off squash bugs, I have been working on building a truly hot compost pile\-\-it works! I would like to get involved with the row for hunger project. Also experimenting with ditch irrigation rather than city water. I am Recently "retired" though I think of it more as a change in careers from administration to backyard farming. I don't spend much time at the keyboard...maybe once a week, so I guess I would consider myself a lurker. But your knowledge is invaluable and greatly appreciated.

Greetings royal participants. And my thanks go out to Leann who has me all decked out for a Queeny Halloweeny just in time, mind you. I now have my kitchen sink shelf adorned with a shaker/snowball cat and pumpkin decoration, bejewelled spider champagne glass LOL! Orange and black candles aplenty, a pumpkin container that came filled with allium (I love allium!) A black dragonfly plant poker, spider rings (tempted to wear them to work tomorrow LOL) garden gloves which are indispensible, a wonderful and welcome kitchen towel in herbal design, tiny windchimes which I adore, crocus chrysantus in purple and yellow- always welcome for cheerful Springs, a wonderful small 16 month calendar which will be in the garage for my memos on gardening tasks and my new 2 yr pocket planner for work- I was just panicking that I'm only a month away from needing a new one and POOF there it is complete with adorable puppies on it! Perfect. LeeAnn you have made this Queen rich with gratitude for your wonderful holiday box and bountiful treasures. And let's not forget to mention the bag of assorted Hershey's Nuggets, except if the hubby is around..... Have a royal and Happy Halloween all and my thanks to LeeAnn for a wonderful set of surprises so welcome on these cold, wet gardening days.

Born and raised in a small town west of Dubuque IA and have lived in Cedar Rapids IA now since I was 18 (hate to admit it but 28 years later....) Flood of 2008 took our kitchen remodel money and we had to re-save so its now almost complete in 2010! Counters go in next Tuesday. Had to cut back on a few things since I wanted the kitchen done more than I wanted to keep saving so no recessed lighting, using 4 inches of granite for backsplash instead of 18 inches of tile, no heated floors (in Iowa...brrrr), etc. Still happy and debt free when its done! :)

I'm apparently forever glued to central Oklahoma. Currently in OKC, but moving north to Edmond (and into a new construction kitchen - still in the paper stage) in a year or two.

Born in Pickens County, SC and have lived here in Liberty about a mile from where I was raised except for a yr in Greenwood, SC and 7 miles away in Clemson, SC while in college. Graduate of Clemson University's College of Nursing. Work close by and love raising my kids in my small town. Wouldn't ever think of leaving. Low crime, quiet area, great schools, 4 hrs to the beach, and less than an hour to the mountains of NC. All 4 beautiful seasons.

Lolauren, my brother lives in Richland and works on the Hanford cleanup project. I've been there on business (Hanford related as well). Does that count? :-)

Pugrolls, I was born in Seattle (Providence) and lived in View Ridge/Sand Point area. Been in So. Calif. for 37 years. Still miss the rain.

Born and raised in Metairie, Louisiana, just West of New Orleans. Moved North about 60 miles to Covington, Louisiana 34 years ago. We'll be moving another 15 miles North in a week or two to Folsom, Louisiana.

Born and raised a city girl but ya can't take the country outta me! I'm a country girl at heart.

As soon as I retire in 3 years, we're moving out of Louisiana. There has to be a better place than this! The only thing I'll miss is the food.

Hey mountaineergirl! Glad to know I'm not the only one from "Almost Heaven West Virginia!"

I'm from the big city of Charleston -- fourth generation (at least); went off to college in central Kentucky, seminary on Boston's North Shore, honeymooned across America with everything I owned in a UHaul truck to settle in Los Angeles for 4 years, then came back east, inside the Capital Beltway in Maryland for 6 years, then finally home again, home again to Charlie West. Like Dorothy said, "There's no place like home!"
