Good News--Rain; Bad News--Hail

A thunderstorm rolled through about 6 last evening with hard rain, then while DH and I stood on the porch and watched just a few minutes of quarter to fifty cent piece size hail fell. We watched it strip most of the leaves off the corn before half the stalks fell. This morning I picked a plastic WM bag full of dinged green tomatoes which I will give to a friend who likes them fried. The large leaved plants were badly hurt. Winter squash just blooming--shredded. Okra leaves--broken and hanging. Watermelon leaves--shredded and beat into the ground. The pole beans I picked yesterday--few leaves left. I can see the beans I missed.

But the good news is that the 2&1/2 inches of rain following last Thursday's 1&1/2 in. mean that it is the perfect time to plant the fall garden. Is it too late for corn and potatoes?
