tina, do you mean the hue or sheen as being "flat"?

My own preference has always been for glossy exterior doors. I think they look better and, especially in the days before paint advances, cleaned up more easily too.

I mean more about the color itself. Maybe "depth" is the right word? You know how black can look Blah. Especially on my cheap metal garage door!

TIna, I think it is the sheen that is making it look blah. I think more of a semi gloss or gloss would help the colors look much richer.

Higher gloss will make it look richer, but then you also have to deal with the visibility of dings, dents, etc.

I recently painted my front door black. When I went to the paint store, the gentleman recommended I get BM black that is premixed. It's black black and that's what I wanted. Semi-gloss I think. He said unless you want an off black, it's a good way to go. Kept me from having to pick a black!

I like black panther in your pics above bc it is richer/deeper than wrought iron (which looks charcoal to me).

Yes the wrought iron is coming off charcoal.

The painters didn't show up today. Again. But that gives me time to get more samples. I hate color. This is why I use the same colors over and over.

AKTillery. The samples only come in eggshell. When I order the paint I can get whatever shine we want. The problem is it's a tacky old metal garage door that's dented and dinged. And the front door is worse. So the higher the shine the more all those imperfections will show

I decided to go with Benjamin Moore Black for the shutters and garage door. They are cheap metal so I'm not sure what sheen.

I am also not sure what to do with front door and screen door. . Husband doesn't want a black door.

A blue would look great. Just choose a color you like.

Kind of joking here but seriously. .....What finish goes best with cheap metal? Satin or semi gloss? The garage door and shutters are both cheap metal.

You can't use a dead flat exterior. Eggshell is the lowest gloss level I'd recommend. Satin is what I prefer across the board exterior.

Ok going with satin. Just need to figure out color for screen door and front door.

I still like a pale aqua color for the door/screen.

lizbeth, not sure in the photos which color that is on tina's door.

Wythe blue is is one of BM's historical colors, named for George Wythe, who lived in what's now Colonial Williamsburg and was Virginia's first signer of the Dec of Independence. The Wyeth family of artists (N.C., Andrew, Jamie) are an entirely different kettle of fish (or can of paint!).

If you can believe it we have not finished painting. The painters finally showed up yesterday after being mia for two weeks. At any rate, I landed on Benjamin Moore Black for the shutters and garage door.

I was still struggling with the front door color and was at BM for the millionth time. While I was there I happened upon the Colorist for BM. She said my problem is the refrigerator white siding. That's why the plain BM black looks good and why it's so hard to pick a front door color. Long story short after putting up seven more samples I have chosen Anderson Blue for the front door. Of course today they were supposed to paint and it's raining! You have to have a sense of humor right???

They did manage to get the garage door painted and it's a world of improvement!

i was looking at a green color and then looked around at my neighbors houses with the painters. Both of my immediate neighbors are green. Across the street is a green door and even two doors down the house is green. It's a green street. So Thats when i seriously started looking at the blues. Not that I couldn't go green. It just seemed best to go Blue and not clash with this sea of green.

Love it all!!!! The black garage door and shutters look great. I love the Anderson Blue! Funny b/c I was going to say when looking at first pic today that you should use the large color chip or the one in the middle on the right. Glad they're the same color!

Thank you! Yes it is not a color I would choose by looking at it in the store but it works on the house. If that makes any sense.

It is Tiffany Blue! That's what they should call it instead of Anderson Blue. Maybe that's why I like it!!! But it's funnny because in the paint store it looked muddy and dark. Totally different color on my porch

Any opinion on what to paint the guest house front door and storage room door opposite? They're attached to the garage. So either black or blue.

Hmmm...my first instinct for guest house is black for both doors.

I call it Monet blue and it's gorgeous and works soooo well. You were lucky to find the colorist. Your house is looking fabulous. note to me: add Anderson blue to your design book.

Yes! It's a happy color. My shutters are pathetic and I need to replace them. They're metal. Dented up and the wrong size. But at least now I've got the colors done. That's the hard part. Hopefully the painters will finish today. Thank you for the help!

Oh my gosh. I love it! This is why I want a white colonial - to paint the door a fab color like this. I hope you love it!!

I'm so glad y'all like it! I love it! It's a happy color! Not what I had originally picked but I think it works with the super white siding.

The painters were a nightmare. I'm going to have to redo the front door at some point because they did such a terrible prep job. But it's over. I'm so glad they're gone. Lesson learned. Don't go with the cheap painter you don't know. Go with the expensive painter you know will do a good job!

Does anyone have an opinion on the big bushes (Nanda) on either side of the porch? I'm thinking about giving them the ax because they're stringy and I dont like nandina. But it goes against what my sister has always told me " Don't get rid of anything green!" I was thinking about putting flower beds there. But they would be low.....
