Hm good point John. I can't remember how much was left over if any from last season ! Also it occurred to me maybe they were damaged from that past freeze we had . I'll check the leaves today and see. I saw spots on a few of the fallen leaves but the shrub is looking clean now. Maybe I over reacted ! Wouldn't be the first time! Haha luckily my shovel was elsewhere;)

I had Ballerina at my previous house and loved it. Bought three tiny ones for my new house last year and they are gradually growing. It does get some black spot but not bad for me, and my current baby plants are not exfoliating.

Lilyfinch, I'd love to know what you are growing that is having good blackspot resistance in our MidTn climate. The Teas do great for me in the summer, but I can't seem to get them through the winters--even our mild ones!

I have given up on teas and the idea of roses that start being hardy in zone 7. They just don't work for me ! I had posted earlier spring that my duchess de Brabant (3plants )barely made it through winter . I lost mrs b r cant., perle d or is dying in a pot , and my moscata musk rose is also not coming back well. I really wanted to try crepuscule but cancelled that order because it just isn't worth wasting my money . So all that remains older rose wise is buff beauty(gets blackspot ) , 3 terrible looking duchess , a chlotilde soupert ( balls like crazy and I have its bags packed if it does it again ) . My best roses are flamenco Rosita , renea ( gets bs but laughs it off) , cloud ten , darlows enigma and blossom time . Also Cornelia was fantastic and I believe Felicia is doing well . What did you lose this winter ? It's such a bummer , we had such a mild winter when I first moved here but now it's just killing my roses

Patty .. When you decided to shovel prune it and others was it painful ? Honestly I just hate to think of the years I've grown it and the money it costs and the big shrub that it is .

I think this is about the right spot - practically in the basement. If it blooms I notice it, if it doesn't bloom, I don't notice it.

Lily, I'm also curious about the yellow leaves with some green pigmentation. Most of my roses had fallen leaves that look like those. These happened after the constant rain (and they're all in pots). Did you get much rain lately?

Yes we have been getting rain at least one day of storms a week . I don't have drainage issues though, my land slopes naturally to a lake so I'm sure it's not drainage. Do you think all the rain has brought out the blackspot early ?

Hi lily, I just wanted to sympathize with you since 3 of my roses already have black spot. :( even two of my knockout roses! Which supposedly are suppose to be resistant. I will say I have 30 of them, so technically 2 isn't bad, but one of my baby St. Joseph's Coat has it. I've been picking the leaves off, but it's still rather depressing. So just know your not alone! For reference I'm in 9b

I am in zone7 Alabama and some of my roses are already showing some Black spot =(. I went crazy and sprayed them already. I couldn't help but notice to mentioned you have Cloud 10 =). I planted 4 cloud 10 from heirloom, (no flowers yet) but I can't find much online about them. Could you please tell me about them? Do they bloom well? Rebloom?

Also I am new to gardening and forums, but ill ask in case you are not into complete organic gardening. Have you tried "Bayer Advanced™ Disease Control for Roses"? I used it after the black fungus started and it really helped. Sorry if you are an organic gardener I am sure there are other things that would be better.

Thanks Lily! I have Flamenico Rosita (I bought it as Sir Ivor's Rose) and it is clean and spectacular. I probably would have given up on roses after the teas all slowly wasted away if I hadn't had it around as an example that no spray blackspot free roses can actually exist here. Reve d'Or is resistant, beautiful and done well through the last 3 winters but may have suffered with this late freeze, we will see. This winter (even before the late cold snap) I lost Le Vesue, Mdm Antoine Mari and Mon Tillier. Mrs B.R. Cant is down to one cane after the late freeze so she's getting the shovel. All I have left is Duchess de B in an extremely protected spot, and of all things Mutiblis against a stone wall that must keep it warm--I love him but have always viewed him as temporary and am surprised every year when he leafs out! I've concluded that to grow teas and chinas around Nashville you need the urban heat island effect which I just don't have here in rural Franklin.

But there is good news. Other than Sir Ivor/Flamenico, Pinkie is very good and Marianne (a Paul Barden once bloomer) is good but might drop off later in the summer but since I only see it when it blooms that works. I got Caldwell Pink last year and am optimistic about it after a year. I ordered Darlow's Enigma this year so am very happy to hear it works for you. Also this year I ordered Carmella Fairy Tale since poorbutroserich says it's one of her cleanest (I got Sir Ivor from her recommendation!) Clair Matin, Carefree Beauty and another Barden rose Incantation, plus Cecil Brunner and La Marne. I'm pretty much working my way through the Earthkind roselist--of the 21 they list I've grown or have ordered 16 of them over the last 5 years. The z7s don't make it through the winter but what does seems pretty good. I've now added your successes to my list.

Here's Sir Ivor from late last year, you can see the clean leaves in the arrangement even though it's at the end of the season! Poorbutroserich once said if it had been given a sweet and charming name everyone would have it--I agree.

subk3 your roses look spectacular! Being in zone7 I am always looking for roses that can do well in black spot territory and Sir Ivor is so gorgeous I think I need it =)

Dianela, hello!! My cloud ten has been wonderful , I'm sure you see how thorny it is but otherwise it was very clean last year and rebloomed enough for a plant that was just settling in ! I really like it a lot! There is recent thread here asking about it ! Just a day or two ago , and I posted some photos! I think you'll be very happy with it ! 4 will look wonderful ! are they all planted together ? Photos please!

i don't spray .. It's mostly laziness but now I have a little girl and I'm a little more leery of that stuff. So I probably won't start . I try really hard to grow what will do well without it . I did order Sonia rykiel which is rumored to be a bs rose so we will see ! Also you will love sir ivor !! It is amazing and subk3 isn't kidding.

Subk3.. How are your new dawns doing ? Still training them on the wall ? Such a lovely sight. I'm interested in how your Claire matin does ! Please do let us know. I've always wanted it but for one reason or another never added it . We also are lacking the urban heat thing out here, I really had no idea how much open land makes a difference!

what is your duchess looking like ? Is it more than a foot tall with more than one branch ? Lol I really should get rid of mine but it was lovely as it grew last year. One of my 3 is 2 foot tall but half the bush died so it looks very awkward.

Your sir ivor ( seriously it sounds like a creepy Dracula character or something ! ) looks beautiful! I agreed it should be more grown. It's really a knock your socks off rose! Non stop blooms , disease free , beautiful form and fragrance?! What else is there? :)

Forgot to add teasing Georgia to my list . It does get a smudge of bs but has never looked bad from it . It's blooms are so worth it !

Jackiedavis , sorry you are also battling blackspot already ! If it was July I wouldn't blink an eye . I hope your climbing Joseph's coat does well ! I've would love to see it when it blooms ! It looks like such a beauty.

I am really excited to see my clouds 10 growing up =)!. My husband and I bought a 1940's little white house that has a few steps on the front of the house, so I planted a cloud 10, and a raspberry cream twirl rose on each side of the steps (band size last June). The other two are are on the side of the house. My hope is to have an arch over the steps covered with the climbing roses. I will take pictures when I am home (they are still only maybe 2-3 feet tall). Do you have any raspberry cream roses, my little ones don't seem to be affected by Black spot. Thank you for the all the answers! I am going now to go drool over your beautiful cloud 10 pictures on the other thread. =)
