Can blackspot kill a rose?
Comments (10)Is there something about his sprayer that is the problem? If that is it, go to Home Depot and buy an easy-to-use 1 gal. hand-pump sprayer in the garden center and a bottle of Bayer Advanced Garden Disease Control (fungicide). Following directions, put some Bayer in the sprayer (about 1.5 tablespoon, if I remember correctly), a few drops of dishwater soap (I never can remember if Bayer already has a stick-um in it), and fill the sprayer with water up to the 1 gal. mark. Then pump the handle up and down several times and turn it back to the lock position. Aim the wand at the bush and press the "on" button (you may have to adjust the tip of the wand to a wider spray pattern). Spray until everything is wet. That's it. Oh, yes--pick an early morning when there is almost no wind at all, and make sure you are wearing long pants/long sleeves, etc., at the very least, and always stay downwind from the spray wand. The hardest part about spraying for me is making myself do it--but with the cooler temps, I know my garden is going to have a bout of BS, so I assume yours will too, unfortunately. Really, it is very easy to spray--once I convince myself to get off my duff and actually do it. LOL Good luck, Kate...See MoreAngel Face....too much Blackspot?
Comments (23)ANGEL FACE is the very essence of femininity. Sadly, she puts everything she has into blooming. This rose is very capable of blooming itself to death. I learned this lesson the hard way. I flat out killed it the first time by treating it like a garden shrub. ANGEL FACE must be sprayed, watered and fed in regular cycles to support its furious bloom habit. The foliage is very prone to black spot. If clean leaves are a goal then she will need to be sprayed every week with a fungicide designed specifically for black spot (I used Mancozeb). Water weekly unless it rains. She also benefits greatly from organic treatments. I've never been able to grow the rose as tall as those in Rosebud's pic because frankly I'm forgetful/lazy about putting down the Mills Magic Mix (alfalfa). Mine hovered at between two and three feet tall, which is not really a bad thing. Short roses have their uses. For example, she is stunning in the front of the flower border, cultivated in a big fancy pot, or grown as a standard (tree rose). If you grow this rose own root make sure to get a virus free clone, and at least for the first year remove all buds to divert the plant's energy into growing rather than blooming itself into oblivion. Is she worth the extra effort? Absolutely. I haven't grown this rose for about five years and I miss her dearly. The dusky lavender color doesn't gray out like so many other mauve roses. The ruffled petals are especially charming and the flower form looks good from bud to fully open bloom. In fact I like the mature flowers most of all because the ruffled mauve petals open up into a gorgous frame for the golden yellow stamens in the center. The contrast is striking. Then there is the fragrance. ANGEL FACE is a Gamble winner and trust me, she deserved that honor. The Damask base note has great depth while the fresh citrusy top note dances on the olfactory nerves like a prima ballerina. A virus indexed ANGEL FACE is available at VINTAGE GARDENS (http://vintagegardens.com). There is also a climbing sport. Comments (20)Kordes rule in my z5/6 no spray Massachusetts garden. I have also had great luck with some of the Easy Elegance roses. "Yellow Submarine" has gorgeous yellow blooms all summer, even though she only gets about 4 hours of sun, "Music Box" which was a brand new band last year so not prolific at flowering yet but has blooms of pink and yellow swirls and "Centennial" which sadly seems to be out of production and my favorite has beautiful softest pink to cream tea rose like blooms. No scent though. Yellow Submarine courtesy of rose solutions Macy's Pride courtesy Easy Elegance website All of the Easy elegance roses are own root grown and nursery stock has a two year guarantee. I have "Macy's Pride" on order another creamy/soft yellow rose. The only thing their roses lack is scent. For DA I have good luck with Heritage, Charlotte and Windermare which is a blooming machine though not heavily scented. Bolero was decent as was Julia Child although Julia is not very hardy. The Kordes were exceptional though and most came through the winter with very few issues, a few broken canes from heavy snow and minimal tip death. As a plus some of them even smell delicious :-) Sharon...See MoreGood bye to Ballerina
Comments (29)As I mentioned above, the sellers that can't send potted plants to Idaho are Edmunds Roses, Jackson&Perkins, Park Seed, and Wayside Gardens. The last three listed are all in the same company. There may be more forbidden sellers that I don't know of. The desert is not prime ag land. I live out in the desert hills. There is prime ag land in the river valley areas just a few miles away. This is made possible by irrigation, as I've mentioned many times before. My stepdad pumped water with electric pumps out of the Snake River directly because he had first water rights. That water was further pumped to his concrete ditches where it was distributed to each row in a field. Huge sprinkler systems are also used. The wonderful water begins in our mountains as the valuable snow pack, which melts and eventually makes its way to rivers. Lots of this water is stored in reservoirs behind dams to be released as needed. The dams produce hydroelectric power as well, which is where all our electricity here comes from.
