I think I did something bad to my jade plant...

Greetings all!

I'm a long-time reader of these forums, and a first time poster. I'm writing
to ask advice about a beloved jade (actually four plants in a single pot),
which I may have pruned over-zealously. I bought it from a previous owner about
a year and a half ago, moved it to a bigger pot last spring, keep it in a
west-facing window (the most light I can provide), fertilize and trim it
regularly in spring and summer, and generally dote on it. It's responded with
vigorous growth and a beautiful emerald color.

All winter I'd refrained from trimming it, which resulted in long stems,
many growing horizontally. With spring
finally dawning here in New Jersey, I studied up on previous jade pruning posts
(http://forums2.gardenweb.com/discussions/1487275/jade-plant-took-a-bow-where-to-snip,
http://forums.gardenweb.com/discussions/1850318/new-jade-plant-advice-needed),
took up my shears, and went for it.

Here’s what I did: 1) Removed anything growing horizontally,
cutting these stems back a node or two away from the main trunk. 2) Cut back
the long stems, even if they were growing totally upright -- I did this to
encourage more compact growth -- but left some leaves on each stem. 3) Removed
the smaller, lower-most branches (as I would like to ultimately have a kind of
tree-shaped, bonzai situation) – but I left some if I did not think there were
enough leaves on the uppermost parts.

The result is not pretty – and though I know that’s to be expected with a
major pruning, my concern is that 1) I have made the cuts in an idiotic way and
won’t like the way it grows back and 2) I don’t even have a very good sense of
how I want it to take shape, or how to work with it when it starts growing back
(I’m afraid to even entertain the possibility that I’ve done real damage to the
plant). There is also not a lot of symmetry among the four plants (before the
pruning or after).

I’m posting several “after” pictures below -- if anyone has experience with
pruning and shaping jades, I would be so grateful to have your advice. Many
thanks, in advance!
Bridget
