I did something bad

I told my husband I wasn't going to buy any plants this year, and I was sincere when I said it, but that was before it got warm and the clematis started to grow. I said it partly because I am changing two of the gardens year, so some clematis will have to be moved. Plus, I still have clematis in the vegetable garden where they spent the winter.

I thought it was a good goal to have considering all the work I have to do, but the garden centers are just starting to get perennials in and my mind wanders all the time wondering what they have this year because the selections change from year to year you know and there is always something available that is on my want list!

Janet, I am with you! I though my garden is stuffed. I even sold some plants via Craigslist. Then, I saw some fantastic new Lilies and Hellebores - placed a couple of online orders... Then, a new feeder and new Petunias for humming birds... Purple Eucomis bulbs at Costco (I instantly recalled a picture of Miguel's garden...), some herbs, a couple of new exciting Hydrangeas...
Garden Crossings sold out Clematis 'Bijou'. It would be on that list as well.
Will we ever stop???

If he loves you, he won't mind. Besides, it's been on your want list for a while, and we all know "those" plants don't count!

catherinet, Relax...and as Dave advised, have patience with these new guys in your garden. 'Gus, new or older, needs two things to become vigorous (assuming you planted well..fertilized, etc.). He needs moisture, and he needs HEAT. It seems that "global warming" somewhere has sucked the heat out of our spring. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised when temps have climbed to more normal levels. Even healthy, well established beds slow way down when the temps are so cool. Post back when you've had temps in the 70's for a week or so. (poor bunny...he must have been so disappointed) Hal

DON'T DO IT!! Below is a picture of my iris garden right now. Because of my broken arm in June, I haven't been able to do much of anything. I did weed my bed behind the house, but with 1 hand, and it took a long time. My husband planted tomatoes but won't help with my irises. I am not giving up! Right now I am working full time, plus going to physical therapy 3 days a week and really don't have a lot of free time, but it will get done. Next year I definitely will use Preen, or some other preemergent. Might be getting to cool outside to use Round Up right now, but I might try that too. If I am successful, I will post an after picture. Even though iris season is short, they are too beautiful to do away with. Shadow Belive it or not, about 150 irises hiding in there.

I am SOOOOO glad to see that we aren't the only one that has dogs... and kids.... that do things like that. I would try some oxygen bleach and as warm as you can stand water on it. It worked for us when we had to clean a spaghetti sauce mess when one of boxers helped himself to some. Can't even see the spot on beige carpet....

I have few suggestions - not about plant yet: The container...it is very nice but probably not most practical since it recurves on top and is quite narrow. It will cause bit of a problem whenever repotting. If my, I would keep just 1 plant in it. It is easier to use containers wider on the top. More practical problem for you... It is advised to make sure there is good drainage - well draining soil and drainage hole in the container. There are ppl that grow succulents in containers without drainage hole very well, but I would suggest that they are very experienced and knowledgeable and can provide best conditions for their plants. Jades respond to very drastic pruning, we even call it whacking. There are many threads on subject of whacking here. Severe pruning and often no leaves left at all. Your plant looks very nice but IMO it is little etiolated. That happens if plant wants more light. Branches keep growing fast, skinnier than if more light was available, and the leaves are spaced further apart. I would say that you did good job pruning. If the result doesn't please you, plant could be pruned further. Bu it is difficult to suggest where to cut: everyone has different idea as how they want their plant to look, so you really need to know how do you want it to look in the long run (not so easy!). It also takes a while before new growth fills in and you can really see new shape. I can only tell you what I would do if my plants: I would pot them separately - that way each plant has plenty of room to grow in each direction. I would make sure there is lots of light - if not enough available, it will continue growing in very similar way. If not enough indoors, maybe you should consider adding supplemental lights. Many of us do, light coming thru the windows is not as strong as it would be outdoors. I also put them outdoors, into full sun, as soon as it is warm enough. If you can't or don't want to, supplemental light indoors may be of great help. I would most likely shorten few long branches - but that is personal preference. I would make sure plant is in fast draining potting mix and provide drainage hole. I never fertilized my jades, and they grow just fine. Few of them bloomed first time this year, these are not very old plants (perhaps 5-6 (?) yrs old, I got them quite small - definitely smaller than your plants - 4yrs ago). Your choice - but IMO, fertilizing plant that grows in less light only makes it to grow fast and thin. Your choice :) At this point, maybe you should leave them pruned as they are. They should start growing new leaves and branches. It may take 3-6 weeks before you see new growth; how long since you did pruning?

I have about fifty plants in my pot ghetto but I spent $65 at a sale the other day.....

DH finally expanded my flower beds in the front yard and put siding on the shed though so I will have some extra planting room. Can fit five Clemmies on the shed...

I feel for you janet! I told my DH that I wasn't going to buy anymore plants this year, especially since looking at my credit card statements lol. That was until I discovered the idea (again) of potting up! lol
Now I bought 6 more roses, 8 more annuals to pot up around the potted roses, and came home from Lowes with 16 hyacinths!
I know it MUST be an addiction! I have now officially declared myself as having C.H.A.D! Compulsive Horticultural Aquisition Disorder. lol

Yesterday, I told the husband I had to go to Lowes for something. He didn't ask what, and even though he had to buy some screening, he parked by the garden center. LOL!

I'm glad you mentioned Lowes. I forgot they are having a 2 for one sale on herbs and vegetables today.

I say the same thing every year...but what is Spring without the trip to the nursery, winter reading of Plant Catalogs..It's either innate or genetic..I am a Proud member of C.H.A.D. and have given up..happy shopping..happy planting..we are all deliriously happy and doomed eternally to spend Springtime Aquiring and planting..I've give in and up!!..Jeanne

Our weather is actually better here in fall for planting than spring but the garden centers don't stock nearly as much. There was a great tour of small specialty nurseries mostly wholesale only open for a week to retail but they aren't doing it this year...

I made my first slip today, but it wasn't my fault. I have seen Piilu at 4 different nurseries this year. I said no every time even though it was the only one that I saw that I wanted.

Today I went to CVS pharmacy to get something, and guess what? They were selling plants there. And guess what else? That's right they had clematis and on a lower shelf there was a flat of Piilu! I took it as a sign that I was meant to buy it. Across the street from CVS was a hardware store that sells plants every year, which is actually one of the better places to buy plants in the area. Guess what they had there? Vino! It was a Donahue's baby that was now very well rooted. I had to get it.

I did the same thing Janet, but DH says "See I told you it wouldn't be the last this year"! He knows, and just expects it. :)
