How long for new asparagus to grow?

Okay, Okay, I know I did something bad. I bought a bag of asparagus (Jersey King) from a nursery. I wanted to get them planted quickly, and decided to take the chance with that packaged stuff. We planted them (8) about 12 days ago. I have kept them watered. There is only 1 tiny one poking through. Should I be seeing more by now, or do I just need patience? Thanks.

Thanks for the information Dave. And thanks for providing the search link, I always forget about the search link. I had heard/read that starting from seed is less desirable, but I figured since I got in the seed I would use it- and give myself some time to get the bed set up. I figure if by the time the bed is ready to go, if I'm not happy with what I got from seed, I can get crowns of another sort at the time. I'm patient, and figure I probably won't see anything till at least 2020. I also figured that the wet area in the sun would be the best spot, but I wasn't sure. It's big enough that I can probably expand it a bit more as time and need go on. That drive is about 200 feet long, but I figure the usable area is more around 150 feet long- and of that I figured starting out with a 20-40 foot long patch was reasonable. Maybe I'll end up with two patches, one from seed starts, and one from crowns. Reason I figured around 60-80 pound a year is because my husband and I can go through 30-40 pound a year. I pick it up by the 10 pound bag when the local farm starts selling it in the spring. Now that I have mom and sis living with us, and they love asparagus too, I figured the increase. But then, if it were free out of my garden instead of buying it, we might end up eating more than we currently do. So maybe 60-80 pounds is too conservative an estimate.

If you could go back in time, you should have had it finish graded the first time. Whatever you do to this soil will have to be repeated when the final soil is in. Then you could have started watering it as if you wanted to sprout new grass seed. That daily watering would have sprouted all the weed seeds and then the RoundUp would have given you a perfect bed for new grass. Even if you kill all the weeds in this current level of soil, the new soil will bring in more weed seeds. When you start watering the new grass, the new weeds will sprout and you'll be starting with a weedy lawn. Looking forward if you had the soil delivered today, you could begin watering daily now to sprout the weeds, spot spray the Round Up in a week, and then do your seed.

Sounds like the are quite tiny plants if height is given in inches. I have some that were mailed by Shirley a while back ago. I kept them in pots one whole season while I picked good spots for them; I don't have many shady spots so I had to move them around during that year and being potted helped. I then planted them on year 2. All were several inches tall. They are slowly getting larger, still less than one foot. A few are probably closing in on that 1' mark but most still under a foot. But they look fine and bloomed fine this season. The point is that they can take 1-3 years to become larger and established as the roots grow. Do not measure their progress in terms of height or blooms. Instead, worry about the roots; let the plants develop a good root system first and then they will be able to quickly zoom upwards and produces lots of blooms. Until then, keep a watchful eye on them, water them appropriately and post if something does not feel or look right to you.

Mine took almost a month for the first one to come up. I thought they were dead. But they're all up now. 20 crwns planted.

I planted around 30 about a month ago and now 11 of them are up, the first one for about a week. When we had a few warm days is when most of them came off. It has since cooled down again.

I was definitely getting worried. A couple of weeks ago I uncovered one to make sure it wasn't rotting, but it was fine. The shoots are really really skinny.

Thanks everyone,
I won't worry so much now. its funny.......I have a bunny problem, and just to be on the safe side, I laid a couple of my tomato cages around the trench, so it wouldn't be so easy for them to maybe munch on what sprouts came up. I went to check on the bed yesterday, and there was a bunny, laying in the trench, all comfy. hahaha
The one teeny weeny sprout was still there.

Relax...and as Dave advised, have patience with these new guys in your garden.

'Gus, new or older, needs two things to become vigorous (assuming you planted well..fertilized, etc.). He needs moisture, and he needs HEAT. It seems that "global warming" somewhere has sucked the heat out of our spring. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised when temps have climbed to more normal levels. Even healthy, well established beds slow way down when the temps are so cool.

Post back when you've had temps in the 70's for a week or so. (poor bunny...he must have been so disappointed)

I think the temps are finally going to warm up. Supposed to be in around 80 this weekend. I hope it doesn't fry my tomatoes that I just planted! Might have to get the shade cloth out.
