No experience with it other than to have just taken some down. I was disappointed by how dirty and sticky it was-- not because my grandmother had let it get that way, SHE couldnt reach it and at 90 yo, I didnt expect her to try-- but we had paid a cleaning lady for the last 5-6 yr so there was no excuse for it. That said, I think it is harder to keep wallpaper clean-- but I am going with just a painted backsplash for the short term so I accepted that and see reasons why others might. I think what and how you cook is definitely a factor too-- my grandparents cooked a lot on the stovetop-- basically pan frying everything which definitely puts a film on everything. I don't cook like that ever nor do most of us. I had considered the paintable wallpaper but decided it was too much work for a short term solution. I'll be installing a real backsplash in 1.5-2 yr.

No, delightful! I love birds too and would really enjoy coming for dinner and finding your little flock. This's making me wonder about if some might like to shelter in my powder room this winter...

We used a wide wallpaper border (8 or 10 inches?) two houses ago. We butted it against the countertop (no backsplash in the counter, either - I never cared for those 4" counter backsplashes). I've never seen it done, thought we were cutting edge. We lived there for several years w/ the paper. It worked fine. It was scrubbable paper, so maybe that helped? I'm not a particularly messy cook, either. The current owners left it there and I believe (about 8 years since install) it's still there, so I'm assuming it's held up just fine. Parsuzi.

I realized I never updated you all on what we went with! We got a peel and stick fake tile and love it. It's still holding up so well after 2 years, and everyone who comes over has to touch it to believe it isn't glass. I know fake stuff like this isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it's a nice pop of color in our kitchen until we can afford to upgrade the whole thing.
