Closer Look: Faux Ombre Kitchen Tile
See how this green-apple colored backsplash gets its extra shine
A kitchen backsplash is one of the few surfaces in the kitchen where practicality can go out the door. While you don't want to get out of control and start plastering something like gold-leaf to your kitchen backsplash, this surface allows for more creativity since it doesn't face too much wear and tear.
While we come across a variety of unique backsplashes on Houzz, the ombre look of this backsplash is something we'd never seen before. The apple-green tile in this kitchen almost looks like a color gradient. The look gives this San Francisco kitchen — designed by Amoroso Design — a youthful and fresh feel.

It might look like this tile was gently dipped in bright green glaze, but the effect actually comes from the lighting. Fixtures placed at strategic points underneath cabinets and countertops makes the tile a bit more visually interesting, while still maintaining its classic look.
Glazed in a brilliant peridot shade, Amoroso Designs used a simple subway tile from Walker Zanger's Studio Moderne line, designed by Michael Berman. "The look is a really cool result of the lighting," says Amoroso Designs founder Shelly Amoroso. "It evokes a mood, instead of flattening the look with a consistent light."
The best part is, the effect changes from different points of view in the galley-style kitchen, and can be mixed up even more by turning certain lights on and certain lights off. From here, the eye is drawn towards the lighter shades of green towards the end of the kitchen.
