Try getting him one of those mouth pieces that hold the mouth in proper alignment they really do improve sleeping and eliminate snoring. It would be better for him to stop snoring than for you to try to plug your ears.

Has your hubby been tested for sleep apnea? Sometimes heavy snoring is a sign. I got a cpap machine (that I don't love using, but it's life saving) and completely stopped snoring.

That said, I'd give up on foam ear plugs and get some noise canceling headphones or at least the little rubber earplugs that actually work.

Have also seen these at Walmart.

I wear foam earplugs to bed, any little noise bothers me. I just squish them until they're flat, insert them all the way in and they expand to my ear, never had a problem with them falling out.

Oh, and I buy my earplugs in bulk from an industrial safety supply company. So much cheaper than buying a pack of 3 or 4 pairs from Walmart or the drugstore.

In answer to your question.... First, you need to ensure that you purchased ear plugs that are the right size for your ears. Unfortunately, they don't come in set sizes, but if you look at reviews on Amazon, for example, many times the reviewer will post photos of different ear plugs they've tried lined up side by side so you can see the difference.

Sound really bothers me when I'm trying to get to sleep. We sleep with the big window in the master bedroom open every night. Open wide in Spring, Summer, and Autumn, and open just a little bit during the Winter. There is a year-round creek behind our lot, and the cacophony of bull frog sounds drives me nuts sometimes. And, on some warm Summer nights, the folks next door can get kinda loud while out on their patio with friends. When the wind is really strong I can't get to sleep, etc.

I first tried the Drift to Sleep Ear Plugs Moldex (20 Pairs). But by morning my ear canals would be hurting because they felt too big. I do like the little carrying case that came with them, though. :-)

I know the innards of my ears are small, because I have a comfort problem with nearly every ear bud I've ever tried when listening to music. So, then I ordered the Mack's Ear Care Slim Fit Soft Foam Ear Plugs (50 Pair). When the package arrived, I was disappointed to find that Amazon had sent a different type of Mack's ear plugs. I contacted Amazon's customer service and they told me just to keep the wrong product and immediately sent out the right product (which I received the next day). When the Slim Fit Ear Plugs arrived I compared them to the Drift to Sleep Ear Plugs and saw that they were, indeed slimmer. And, they were more comfortable than the Drift To Sleep, but I still thought "there's got to be something better."

So, because I had them, I tried the "wrong" ear plugs that Amazon had sent. They're the Mack's Ear Care Ultra Soft Foam Earplugs (50 Pair). They're larger than the Slim Fit, but they're a different type of foam and they are much more comfortable.

Having said all that.... Yes, it's important to roll the plug into a tight cylinder, but once you've done that you can't just put it in your ear -- you have to sort of open the ear canal. To do that, you need to pull up and slightly back on your ear. When inserting an ear plug into your left ear, use your right hand (arm over your head) to grab onto the top of your left ear and pull it diagonally up and back. You don't have to pull really hard -- it can only move so far. Many people (and I'm included in this) feel that it also helps to open your mouth when you insert the plug. The sketch on the instruction label on the jar of ear plugs shows the ear plug going straight in. I have found, however, that rather than aiming straight in, the plug goes in better if it's aimed very slightly forward. Repeat for your right ear, using your left hand to pull the ear up and back.

Once you have the plug inserted, keep a finger tip on it for a few seconds while the foam expands to fill the ear canal. Then do the other ear.

I have found that when I have an ear plug in both ears, I don't hear anything. And I mean anything. I don't hear the phone ring; I don't hear the alarm clock; I don't hear my husband talking-to-me-and-thinking-I'm-dead-because-I-don't-respond. Since I sleep mostly on my right side, I have found that using an ear plug only in my left ear works best. It's enough to block out any noise that disrupts my sleep, but still allows me to hear when and what I need to hear.

Also spin them as you put them in. It keeps them compressed. I also spin them for easier removal.

Like Olychick said... you're dh needs to be checked for sleep apnea. My dh used to snore all of the time and I'd wake up and pinch his nose shut. He FINALLY got tested. He has severe sleep apnea and now uses a Cpap machine. It really makes a difference for him. He feels more rested in the morning and I don't pinch him anymore.

Reach around the back of your head and pull the top of your ear up and toward the back. This will help align your ear canal so you can properly insert the ear plug.

My DH's snoring was horrendous, so I took him to a sleep clinic and they found that he stopped breathing 38 times an hour and his blood oxygen level was down to 89%. We have since hooked him up with a cpap. He's feeling much better, looks better, sleeps better and his nights are silent bliss.

I use the foam ones, sort of roll them up, and kind of screw them in, they do work!

I also use the foam ones you scrunch, twist between your thumb and index finger and spin into place.

They wouldn't help me a bit, all the noise I hear is in my head darn tinnitus. I can't stand the feel of anything in my ear canal can't do ear buds.

I use the wax ones and also have two sound machines going in white noise so I probably will be murdered in my bed. I live on a busy street and if an ambulance went by I'd wake up. I always heard the kids even if they whimpered and my husband never ever did. Of course, I didn't wear plugs then or have sound machines. I put up with a snoring husband way too long. He now has his own large bed in the prettiest bedroom in our house and I don't hear him.
