I can't keep my brugs anymore - who can I give them to?

I've been putting off this post for a long time in hopes circumstances would change, but it's not looking likely. I'm going to end up having to move in some pretty ugly and undesirable circumstances at the end of this season, and I've got a number of brugs of different sizes that need re-homing. I live in central Connecticut (06037) and I'm really hoping a local enthusiast can come take them and give them a loving home. among them are:

desiree, double/triple orange (just under six feet tall, multiple trunks)

adora, single white (six feet tall, single trunk, kind of crooked)

durazno, double peach (single trunk, seven-ish feet tall)

super nova, HUGE single white (six feet tall)

unidentified GIANT single white, could be super nova (five feet tall, huge trunk)

unidentified double white (three feet tall)

unidentified ?? (three feet tall)

and a bunch of other small rooted cuttings about a foot tall or under of the same varieties.

I'll also be massively cutting back the small handful of brugs I'm keeping (just the trunks probably), so I'm going to have massive amounts of cuttings of temple goddess, xena, versicolor peach, miss caylie, and possibly tiara.

I'm impossibly disappointed to have to be doing this, but I don't really have any other options at this point. if anyone has any advice for me, I'm all ears, heh.

Hi Rialira-
I am so sorry for you that your circumstances have turned ugly. I know what tough times are, hang in there, God will help you! I would be interested in your rooted cuttings from your large plants, for postage if you're interested. I'd also be intested in Temple Goddess and Miss Caylie. Your brug babies will certainly have a loving home with me! All of my 12 gardens are devoted to them. Hope things start turning around for you-

Sorry to hear about your impending move. Hope your circumstances change soon. Is there a CT or maybe a NE gardening forum? If so you could post there to find someone local that's interested. Good luck.

It does sound horrid, and I empathize about lack of sleep (if I don't get enough, I'm worthless). My mother has Restless Leg Syndrome (they make medication for it) and she does not stomp or thud around the house at night (or day). It's just as is sounds, her legs are restless during sleep and might involuntarily kick, jerk or twitch. I was thinking about the LL's perspective, tho. If I had a tenant that was disturbing others, but said tenant told me they had a medical condition that led to frequent need for nocturnal walks, I'd probably find myself in a pickle. Even if I knew the condition, and that symptoms or remedies didn't mesh, I'd still be in a pickle. I know this is a stretch, but say LL keeps after stomping tenant. Stomping tenant could well produce a doctor's letter that says 'my patient needs to walk at night for relief'. That's just something a LL really doesn't want to push, because pushing it hard enough might find them slapped with a discrimination suit or something. But obviously you can't continue to live like this. I'd suggest something along the lines of larke's suggestion. Be sure to let LL know you understand that she might be dealing with a tenant's medical condition, and you respect that. (That will help keep LL from being put on the defensive. A defensive LL is an uncooperative LL.) Then let her know that you are developing health conditions of your own, find that you can't perform your job as expected, find yourself nodding off at inappropriate times, your heart races at night when stomping starts, etc. (Yes, the hassle part of changing units would be as camlan mentioned in 1st paragraph, 12/5 post.) Despite LLs predicament, and upstairs tenant's stomping, you are still entitled to peaceful enjoyment. Hopefully you can get it with some good old-fashioned open communication and a little psychology thrown in when talking with LL.

Well, I made the trip this morning. I didn't meet the person from the infamous voice mail though. I told the clerk when the cat was taken in and what she looked like and the story about the kittens. She said that she didn't know of anything like that but that I was free to look at all the cats they had. There were some beautiful animals there, but I didn't see my hotel kitty. I can only assume the worst. I showed the lady the picture and she said she didn't remember seeing a cat that looked like that. I guess they get so many it's hard to keep up with each one. They had several kittens as well, but I don't know which if any were hers because I didn't get a look at them before animal control came. Maybe it worked out for the best. If I do get a second kitty as a companion for Jasper and myself it should really be a boy (according to everyone who seems to know), and one that is tame. I don't know why I wanted this kitty so badly... we didn't connect... I spent hours chasing it and watching it run full speed away from me. I asked myself why I really wanted this kitty. I think I just wanted to feel good about "rescuing" a "homeless" kitty. I want to expand my family, but I think when the kitty is right the situation will work out. There was a beautiful silver and grey kitty at a gas station 2 days ago that I tried to approach. It ran so fast, I thought it was going to dart into traffic. I think I would like to get a kitty of the street instead of going to a shelter (especially this one after my dealings with them!). I will just have to find one that isn't quite so scared if that is even possible. I would of course take it to the SPCA to have it speutered and vaccinated before I took it into my home. Anyway... that's the update... thanks to everyone who responded.

Sounds as though there are lots of animal lovers in your new neighborhood, but not a lot of animal caretakers. Some people just don't know what they don't know. THey know they want the cute and fuzzy, but not that they grow up and might need work! So, it sounds like you have an opportunity here! You can be an example for your neighbors as to how to care for an animal at the very least. You can also take it one step further and maybe provide free literature on vet clinics and low cost spay and neuter to your neighbors. If you don't have those services available locally, you can work to make those services available by joining a rescue group and working with other like minded folks. What I'm trying to say is what some other posters have said: there is POWER in numbers. Join a group. Found a group. Get the local kids involved in educational efforts and maybe they won't grow up to be their parents! You feel overwhelmed and a little alone now, but if you make contacts with other like minded folks, your effectiveness as an agent of change multplies! One person can't save them all....but a dozen people can save a neighborhood. It's like the old shampoo commercial. You tell two friends, and they tell two friends, and they tell two friends..... and the next thing you know, your county is actually opening an animal shelter where none existed before and the deputies just shot stray dogs (true story!).

This goes way beyond normal kids staying up late at night; just the sleep deprivation alone is torture & abuse. The stepson enjoys doing it, & his father enables it. "My family doctor and my psychiatrist feel that I should leave this unhealthy environment but I do love my partner and that is what keeps me here." I hate to say it, but I think you'll leave pretty soon one way or another. If you don't go under your own steam, an ambulance will take you to the hospital or the nursing home or the funeral home. & this "partner" will not come visit you; he'll throw your belongings out & forget about you (although if you're in the cemetary, he may tell people how broken-hearted he is). This is how abusers are, I've seen it before. & he *is* an abuser; even though it's the son who's mistreating you, the father is making sure that the son can keep doing it. sort of abuse at arm's length. It doesn't matter how often you catch the son & present concrete evidence to his dad, the dad will somehow sweep it under the rug & turn the tables & accuse you of causing trouble. That's called blaming the victim. Loving somebody does *not* involve taking whatever abuse they or their messed-up offspring dish out & coming back for more. Loving someone doesn't mean throwing yourself on the floor for them to wipe their feet on & pleading for them to stop; (& why would they? hey, they've got a good doormat there). Loving relationships are just that, *relationships*. Love is a 2-way street, & you are going against traffic on a 1-way street here. You've already gotten to a stop light, & your doctors have told you to take a sharp turn, but you keep thinking that the oncoming traffic will let you through. Take that turn & get off that street. Since you are seeing a doctor & a psychiatrist, I'd guess that you can afford to get a place of your own, but if you can't, call a women's shelter for guidance. Please take care of yourself & be good to yourself.

Ria I will keep you in my Thoughts and Prayers!!! I am sorry you have to let go of all of the things you have worked so hard for.. Once things DO turn around for you I will help you re build in any way I can.. I know personally how hard it is to have to start over...Next yr will be a rebuilding yr for me more losses than not!!

So sorry, Rialira, that you can't take all your brugs with you. Have you posted on the New England forum? Someone (s) there might be close enough to drive over/down/up to pick up some.

Glad to that you are still able to take some of your favorites.

Only God has control of these situations, some day you will be all the better for this rough time.
I would love to have some colors, doubles or just about anything. I have peach/apricot and white. I am just starting this year. I will be glad to pay postage.

sorry I haven't had a chance to reply to everyone! I haven't forgotten this thread though :P

I might have a temporary place for most of my bigger brugs, but the smaller ones still have to go simply because there are too many, and I'll still have a crap ton of cuttings. I'll refer back to this page when it comes time in a few weeks to cut.

in the meantime, would anyone be interested in well rooted NOIDs? they're all two to three feet tall. I have one that was given to me as a double white, two pink ones, and one or two that I'm not sure of. shipping's going to be kind of ugly on them, but they're well rooted healthy plants with a good start already.

I'll try to remember to check this page frequently :)
