Earthkind Brigade Trial in Hot Humid South
Comments (13)I have grown or have friends who have grown, in hot/humid Alabama, all of the above save Dublin Bay, Polonaise, Champlain, of which I cannot make comment since I am not familiar with them. But, all the others are winners from my vantage point. I do grow Quietness, Carefree Beauty (a/k/a Katy Road Pink), and several of the other Buck roses. I mention Carefree Beauty and Quietness since these are two of my favorite roses in the whole world. Gourmet Popcorn has done well for some of my friends who spray but for those who do not spray, it has had blackspot more so than the others. I know that is not much help but I will say it again, "If I had to start all over again, I would only grow Bucks and a couple Noisettes."...See MoreEarthkind Rose of the Year: Mme. Antoine Mari
Comments (12)To their credit, I don't think the Earthkind people make any claims for the performance of their roses in climates different from their own. One of their earliest selections, Belinda's Dream, does abysmally here for me. But that is not their fault. It is a fine idea to have regional lists. I am pleased to learn about the Valley Stars program. I understand that there is a group working in Pennsylvania to figure out a similar list. I'm sorry to say that I forget who they are. No doubt there are others. It is unfortunate that here in the west climate is so variable over a just few miles that "region" is not as useful as it might be. I am a little over 100 miles from UC Davis in the Central Valley but my climate is quite different due to a mild marine influence and the presence of the foothills. The rose selections would not be the same. Good friends who garden about 60 miles from me report that different roses do well in their gardens than in mine. In fact, different roses do well in their two gardens, and they are only about 10 miles apart! This is not to deny that such programs are valuable, and useful as a good starting point in rose selection. I have been willing to audition a number of roses in my garden and select for keeping those that did well for me here (and also that I liked). The rest I gave away -- or if they were very bad, tossed. The average gardener would not be willing to do that. It has been a long and enjoyable experiment. I buy one or two or maybe three roses a year now, and sometimes none. (Lately I've been planting fruit trees.) Rosefolly...See MoreNY Botanical Garden Northeastern Earth Kind Rose Trial
Comments (9)Speaking of the northern Earthkind trials, they really could at least let people know why no details have been released. There were six places involved in the trial. Colorado was the farthest west and Minnesota was the furthest north I think. Then there was Iowa and can't remember the rest. There were 3 separate sets of roses Kordes, Earthkind and Northern Earthkind. Not a word has been released. All of my inquires have been directed to Dr. Ziesak and that goes nowhere. It's annoying! Isn't the NYBG kind of warm. On the line of 6b and 7a it's not really my I idea of cold. Cream Veranda is excellent here. I'm loving my new this year Carl Ploberger....See MoreEarth-Kind roses at the Columbus Park of Roses (Ohio)
Comments (22)I had 3 roses left in South Carolina, after being neglected, hit with lawn mowers/weed eaters, and never even watered in at least 2 years. Sea foam, Caldwell Pink, and a tiny Belinda's Dream that I found searching around the yard. I caught it as it was growing back from being cut, and moved it here. When I moved it, I was hoping it was Easy Does it. I already have two BD, but it got saved anyway, and looks so happy. The funny thing is, roses are doing better for me here in a colder zone, and the only difference besides zone, is hubby isn't here all the time. I keep rubbing it in on him when he says how nice they look - "yeah ... that's the result of not being mowed down in cold blood" lol Well I did neglect them more in SC though, I got tired of fighting the fire ants. Not going to tell him that, because I don't want him near them. ;-)...See MoreSoFL Rose z10
