batten down the hatches!
Comments (14)We have an hour before it's set to hit here. The wind is up already. I got two big way-carts full of sugar maple leaves deposited in their piles. I didn't need any more on my East border but I hope the remaining leaves will disappear with the storm. Seventeen sugar maples is more than anyone needs! But they're like children: which one would you give up? I planted 3 pots of obedient plant. I don't know why that one has been hard for me to keep. Going out now get the last few blooms and then hunker down. Through Indiana the wind's been fierce but the hard rain seems to blow through in a half-hour or less....See MoreBatten Down The Hatches!
Comments (9)Rockman, you are correct. And, for the record, weather in New England does not change any quicker than in other parts of the country either. During winter, in Denver, for example...it's normal to have 70 degrees on Tuesday & 20 degrees on Wednesday. And...in Denver, people would say, "Well, just hang around...if you don't like the weather...here in Denver, it will change quickly...that's the Rockies, ya know!" The only place I've ever lived where folks did NOT use that expression (or some version of it) was CA where they do indeed get LONG stretches of beautiful weather. I've lived in many parts of our country. My experience has been that New England gets a lot of weather (that's sounds odd but you know what I mean). But, we don't get the extremes of weather as other areas I've lived in. We seem to get frequent, mild to moderate weather events. Even this year's flooding was mild compared to other areas of the country. Our daughter was vising last week from Houston. She left home in a severe drought and returned home to a flood caused from 10-15" of rainfall in 36 hours. Houston experiences flooding on a scale worse than what New England experienced this spring on a fairly regular basis. But, I would also have to say that we also do not receive long periods of beautiful weather either...in fact, I don't think we get much of that at all! Of course, that's a personal preference as to what one would consider "beautiful" weather. I'm a CA native so my guage of weather will differ considerably from someone from Minnesota or Texas. What we don't get much of, in New England, are those 70-75 degree days with bright sunshine and very low humidity levels. In fact, I could count those on one hand this spring here in Mystic. When it warms up...up goes the humidity as well and it's miserable outside, IMO. Our summer weather is rarely severe (certainly not severe my mid-Western standards..or even places like Kentucky, Tennessee, etc.). But, again...this spring, we've not gone a week without rain in quite some time...at least not where I live. My soil's saturated and my plants are rotting from lack of sunlight more than too much rain. For the time period of December '05 to present, Mystic is still running a deficit from "average" precipitation amounts. (I realize that's not true for many parts of New England that experienced the flooding a month ago.) This year, we've had weather events every 3-5 days and cool, cloudy weather in between rainfalls so that the ground hasn't had an opportunity to dry before it rains again. New England varies and away from the coast...maybe, the soil has dried but mine has not. The intent of my original "Here we go again!" post though was to note another weekend weather event. Besides being a gardener, DH & I are also boaters. The last weekend we've had without rain was the weekend of May 6/7. We're getting mighty tired of being rained out of the marina. Also, Mystic is a summer tourist community & local business is down this year because of the weekend rains. Our season is short. The lost revenues can not be made up between now & Labor Day....even if it stops raining on Sat./Sun. So, for my neighbor who owns/operates a local retail establishment...it matters not what happens on Tuesday or Thursday. Typically, our weather turns around July 4 to the hot/humid stuff and we'll, probably, be wishing for the cool, cloudy, damp days of this spring. But, for right now...we sure would have enjoyed a cruise to Newport this weekend on our new boat in bright, sunny weather. As you probably know from my posts, I follow the weather closely as a hobby. Spring '06's weather is not unusual...it's just not pleasant. And, I would love to focus on a string of beautiful days...give me a holler when we have 2-3 in a row so I don't miss it!!!!...See MoreBatten down the hatches, Southern New England
Comments (25)Oh yes, we lost power... It went off at 5:30 pm EDT Sat. night and just came back at 5:15 pm EST today, Sunday. 24 hours and 45 minutes (but who's counting). Our line goes over the river and through the woods and they always seem to save it for last. Telephone went off today too, so I couldn't get online (dialup). Temperature in the house got down to about 51 degrees by this afternooon. At least I had my pot of (cold) coffee and the Halloween candy... I went down to the beach this morning - the beach grass buffer zone repelled the waves and there's no damage to the cliff. The beach looked wonderfully smooth as if the storm had ironed it. Just one guy and two happy dogs walking on the sand. The danger zone down the beach was OK too, the water was up to the cliff, but didn't take a bite. I checked with my neighbor - the tree that came down on the property line laid a few branches on his hot tub, but it still holds water, so he's not worried. I'll get an arborist to remove the tree. Last night was hairy at the time of high tide, when the winds and waves were roaring. I was very thankful for my battery-operated radio which helped distract me from the sounds - it was dark so I couldn't see what the trees and waves were doing - all I could do was listen and hope. I jury-rigged a support system for my bent-over wisteria standard so it's upright until I figure out a better support. The good thing is that it will probably bloom beautifully next year. A storm got it last year and this spring was the best bloom it's ever had. Some people beat their wisteria with bats and savagely root prune them to force bloom - I just wait for another storm. Did I mention how nice it is to have heat in the house? I was NOT looking forward to another cold night, or morning rather, with temperatures forecast for low 30's overnight. Bed is nice and warm, but getting up in a cold room can be unpleasant. Not to mention getting dressed. I was also worried about the more tender tropical houseplants And now I can open the refrigerator and freezer without fear. Is the hurricane season over yet? Comments (146)As far as my immediate location we are all ok. Luckily we never lost power. Although the local news still wants us to live in fear so they are telling us even if we have power now, we still might lose it. My dog proved to be very strong, she was on pins and needles all day yesterday. Only went out once in the early am. Then she asked again about 9pm, got out there did her business and rushed back in, gave me a look that read "ok, I'm good, let's go to bed". She was so exhausted she fell sound asleep. My dh's office was open and he went this am. Regarding that bang, I never found it, but I have a hunch it was the first part of the crash I heard a little later. I had those decorative fireplace screens in my windows in the study (I used to have them in my old dining room), but the windows must have flexed and pushed it off the ledge, pushing over a standing lamp. Yikes. funkyart, why didn't I know we are neighbors? I'm on the West Shore. Got a txt from dd1 last night, she was ok. No power since 4pm. I haven't heard from her this am yet. My dh saw her pop up on Facebook, so we know she is ok. It is so hard to imagine the flooding in NYC that they are showing on TV. And the shore seems to have been devastated. Stay safe everyone.
